There is a guy here in Houston wrapping up the development of the 257 Raptor. I am anxiously waiting on him to finish up, same concept as 300 blackout just in .257 caliber.

You have served up:
  • a hanging curve ball
  • a teed up t-ball
  • the ultimate open ended question

The beauty of this question is that you:
  • didn't list a budget
  • didn't list a max range
  • didn't list any limits on optics

You did list the AR15 platform so you may or may not get any recommendations on the AR10 platform.

I now have this on my watch-list to see the range of suggestions......

p.s. notice the winky face!

Might get an AR10?

There's already been a SCAR posted. AR10 is inevitable

I love my AR pistol with the 6.8 SPC II upper. The 11.25" barrel makes a light weight setup with sub-MOA accuracy and can stretch out to 400 yards no problem. The 300 BO isn't a bad round, but I wouldn't go past a 100 yards with it

6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC for AR15. 6.5 Creedmor or .308 for AR10. Thermals can range from a few hundred dollar Sightmark to thousands for night vision. I have two 6.8spc AR15s and both shoot sub MOA with ease

Keep it simple. .308.

And the best thermal you want to afford times 2 (because that's where you'll wind up anyway) .

My 6.5 Grendel is a blast to shoot. I'd recommend it to anyone.

But since this is the OB go with 458 SOCOM or a 50 Beowulf

Light weight .308 carbon fiber barrel with Trijicon ReapIR Thermal. Trijicon has the best civilian thermals out there. But $$$$$. Worth it though. Buy once and cry once.

Yeah need some details on this one. Showing off another one of your toys.

Hey btw I'm contemplating a SCAR17. Think I'll go FDE. Can your shoot .308 ammo through them or only 7.62 NATO? There are subtle differences between the cartridges and the FN boards aren't clear, nor is the FN website. Thanks. Well, it's that or a SP5.

Many thanks. You have any issues w your optics holding up on them? Also read they have some harmonic issue and can destroy a scope after a surprising low round count if it's not rated for the SCAR platform.

I have not had any issues as of now that includes thermal optics and day time optics. But I also don't just go to the range and put 50-100 rounds through it. When I shoot it's while hunting. For what that's worth

I wrote up a long post and the internet ate it. So instead we're trying the short version instead of one of my typical Tolstoy length posts.

5.56, 300 blk, 6.8, 6.5 G, .308, whatever. All kill hogs.

You specifically mentioned ballistics and accuracy. To me that heavily favors one caliber. 6.5 Grendel. Others may have the edge in suppressing, cost, whatever. 6.5 G is something I'd happily use for hogs, deer, self defense, long range, etc.

When I started my "if I could only have one AR" project build, caliber was by far the easiest decision: 6.5 Grendel.

This is the way.

Well ***** I have all the calibers listed, but I don't have a 6.5 grendel. Does that mean I need another build. Guess so.

A 12" Grendel has more retained energy at 400 yards with a 129 grain bullet than a 20" 30-30 has at 200 yards with a 150 gr bullet.

A 20" Grendel should stay supersonic out to 1000 yards for most folks living at most elevations.

I'm finishing up a lightweight 12" Grendel build that's going to weigh ~6 1/2 pounds including a 1-8x optic empty that should sling 123 gr SSTs around 2300 fps, and a 20" Grendel topped with a 3-18x so I can get into some long range stuff.

Even better, Howa and others make bolt action 6.5 grendels. Stock one round and you've got both an outstanding AR do everything round and a low recoiling, flat trajectory lightweight bolt gun your kid could absolutely take a deer with.

6.5 Grendel really hit a sweet spot as a round. And I'm not saying that because I dislike the other options. Only one I don't currently own is 6.8 and it's a damn fine round too.

Like I said earlier, any of the other options will serve well too. But I really like the versatility of 6.5G over the more "niche" other alternative AR calibers.

Yes the scar 17 shoots .308 just fine- I actually use Milsurp .308 in my FDE scar and it's perfectly fine. I also clean it like crazy after each outing but have only noticed mild performance drop off from brand stuff

I just built my light weight .308 above. It was 6.5# without optic. I love that gun so far. Switch between NX8 1-8 and Triijicon ReapIR.

6.5 might be a fun long range complement to it.

Have a day and night pig rig.

Daytime: Daniel defense DDM4-300s 300blk SBR with silencerco omega suppressor and a Nikon 3x basic scope.

Nighttime: Daniel defense DDM-ISR 300blk with integrated suppressor with Pulsar Trail XP38 thermal scope

Ammo: rem hog hammer

Make piggie go nite nite

300blk if you want to shoot pigs as quietly as you can. Just have to mind shot placement or be OK with not recovering a high percentage.

6.8 or 6.6G if you want a better chance at recovery and want to stay in ar15 platform for weight.

Thermal: Pulsar Trail LRF XQ50 or XP50 depending on budget. The Trijicons and NVisions are great as well but I find the Pulsar gets the job done for less money and the laser range finder is a nice feature to have in some situations.
