Well ***** I have all the calibers listed, but I don't have a 6.5 grendel. Does that mean I need another build. Guess so.
A 12" Grendel has more retained energy at 400 yards with a 129 grain bullet than a 20" 30-30 has at 200 yards with a 150 gr bullet.
A 20" Grendel should stay supersonic out to 1000 yards for most folks living at most elevations.
I'm finishing up a lightweight 12" Grendel build that's going to weigh ~6 1/2 pounds including a 1-8x optic empty that should sling 123 gr SSTs around 2300 fps, and a 20" Grendel topped with a 3-18x so I can get into some long range stuff.
Even better, Howa and others make bolt action 6.5 grendels. Stock one round and you've got both an outstanding AR do everything round and a low recoiling, flat trajectory lightweight bolt gun your kid could absolutely take a deer with.
6.5 Grendel really hit a sweet spot as a round. And I'm not saying that because I dislike the other options. Only one I don't currently own is 6.8 and it's a damn fine round too.
Like I said earlier, any of the other options will serve well too. But I really like the versatility of 6.5G over the more "niche" other alternative AR calibers.
