I need a new set of steak knives but don't want to go crazy on cost. Are there any that are worth a dang that are dishwasher safe? I'm open for suggestions on your favorite brand or style. Thanks and enjoy your weekend!

The cutco steak knives are really good. They have a unique serrated blade that keeps the knive sharper, doesn't dull on the plate, saves the sharp edge for meat. All knives need resharpening and they do it for free, just pay shipping. They aren't fancy full tang knives but they freaking work well. And yes, dishwasher safe.

Edit- just checked their website, we have the "Table Knife". Their steak knife is indeed a full tang knife.

I have a set of Henckel's I got for Father's day probably ten years ago. They weren't very expensive. Maybe $60-70 and they've been great.

Well, the wife reminded me we bought a set at my grandmas estate sale. We are good to go!

I second Henckels. We got a set as a wedding gift in 2009, still in great shape today. We, however, do not put them in the dishwasher.

Look for the little dude that looks like he's holding a spear.

We have some custom knives on order but I needed new ones while I wait so we picked up the Cangshan S1 Series from Amazon:

(Ours and the amazon listing are straight edge...not sure why Amazon is showing the serrated version on this version but you get the idea...picture these but with a straight edge)

Look at Laguiole. As with any brands, don't go serrated. Get the high end straight blades that holds an edge real well.

-Cutco knives are not a high quality product and certainly don't meet your desire for a cost friendly solution.
-Serrated steak knives "tear" your meat and are the last knives I'd want to cut a steak with
-A great way to turn a good quality knife into a poor quality knife is to throw it in the dishwasher

+1 more for AC's Henkels suggestion

Outdoors Board reply of the day!

(I have Laguiole knives and love them, but he specifically asked for something inexpensive, and these ain't them.)

Cutting a steak versus chewing a steak is apples and oranges

To that end, so is a feeding tube. Both get it to your stomach.

The cutco blade is loosely called a serrated blade. The serrations have a huge gap between them that lets the tip of the blade contact the plate the the metal between stays sharper as only cuts food. I've used my table knives for nearly 20 years and still happy. Henckels are very nice and definitely a quality build.

Sounds like the OP has a solution.

No, it's not. There is a definite texture difference from a steak cut with a straight edge versus serrated.

You can get Laguiole knockoffs that have a straight edge and are a very reasonable price.

Bought the first set from this article off Amazon and have been very happy with them. Wouldn't run them through the dishwasher though.

I got a set of Schmidt brothers steak knives. They have been great and people seem to really like them. I do treat the handles with wood oil (boos block oil) just to keep them in good condition.

If you don't knape your own blades out of flint or ideally, obsidian, you are doing it wrong.

We have had a set of the Cutco table knives for about 30 years, without any problems. What I like about them is that they will cut through meat like any steak knife, but at the same time the shape is not pointed so you can still use it to spread butter, mayo, etc easily.

The experience I have had with Cutco has been all good. Also as a shipping store owner, I get to see a few other Cutco owners who are sending their knives in to Olean, NY for sharpening. The ones that I have spoken with are 100% pro-Cutco.

What are you eating with a steak knife that requires the spreading of mayo?

You don't eat steak sandwiches?

Seriously sometimes those are the only clean knives in the drawer so it is just handy for my PB&J

Anyone have a suggestion for a good quick & easy sharpener? Have a set of Wutshof's I need to sharpen and don't think my Lansky is the best option.

Got a set of Wusthofs about 10 years ago (I think). I would never buy another set not recommend them to anyone. Most overrated steak knives I've ever come across.

I didn't want to spam this thread right off the bat, but now that some good discussion has been had about the knives I don't feel as bad for throwing my plug in. Plus it's related to steak knives so....

A guy contacted me saying he ordered some high end steak knives and didn't want to be cutting with said knives on ceramic plates, so he asked me to build some "steak plates" for him. They are basically individual sized cutting boards to be used as dinner/serving plates. He also wanted them to be nice looking to match his nice knives, so he went with solid walnut, end grain, with juice groove and extra corner pockets. I was seriously envious of these plates and will probably build a set for myself sometime in the future.

Shameless plug pics.... (please excuse my terrible photography and light glare)

Pics with a steak knife for scale...

As pictured, those were $100 each, but he also chose the most expensive options possible. They could be done for less by using a more economical wood, face grain instead of end grain, no corner pockets, etc.

This customer was local so no shipping was involved.

I don't mind shipping any of my products, but the customer pays whatever the actual shipping costs are. Being solid hardwood, these things aren't light, so shipping a set from Houston to DFW for example would probably cost about $30-$35 for UPS ground and proper packing materials.

How about only 1 big one with the corner pocket? We do "steak night" - the whole 1 1//2" ribeye cast iron skillet & oven thing - and there are no plates at the table etc. We slap the finished steak on a platter, some one slices it, and everyone digs in - and sops up the juice with French bread. Now we use cheesy plastic platters - a fancy cutting board like that would be awesome! Thinking something in the range of 18"x18" or 24" x 24" - more like a big cutting board with the the drain channels and big corner pocket.

Let me know.
