With the added time at home I'm thinking it's a good time for a new puppy. We have had English Springer Spaniels for the last 14 years. Unfortunately, we had to put the older one down last summer. My wife would rather have a smaller breed so I was thinking about going with a Boykin. Anyone have any experience with this breed and know of a good breeder?

I have an English cocker spaniel that's a bird hunting machine. Upland, dove and ducks. He's good with the family too. The boys practically beat him up and he stays calm.

They are pretty soft and sensitive compared to a lab. I find that they are easier to work for my style. Also, I like having the ECS around the house more than a lab. Never thought I'd be saying that

I know of some reputable breeders if you're interested. Also, someone was selling some really good looking Boykin pups on texags not too long ago

I was originally thinking about english cockers. I've hunted with the guides out at Joshua Creek and they are awesome dogs. Please let me know of a good breeder if you know of one.

I just "inherited" a Ryglen Cocker from a recently deceased client. He is a blast.. I have owned several Brittanys, a Field bred Springer, GSPs, and two Labs. They all have their purpose when hunting, but this guy has won my heart.
As far as Boykins are concerned, I may get blasted for this, but I am not a fan.

Their temperament is "iffy" , some are nice and some are maniac Cudjos.

They are burr magnets like all spaniels.

The "great" ones are as good as a "good" Lab on marking and handling shot birds.

They flush, but not as good as a good cocker or Springer.

It really depends on what you want the dog to do. Unless you just fall in love with their size and color, then I would look elsewhere.

Additionally, the breeders of the good ones are super proud of those pups in terms of $$$.

Interesting. I had an English Springer that I had to put down 18 months ago. Loved him, but my wife nixed the idea of replacing him with another Springer. Too much energy.

We went with a Boykin. I love the little dog. I have not hunted with her much, but she's great. I bought her from Texas Trace in Hempstead. One of the ladies that run it is an Aggie. She swam for A&M in the 80's. They will also train.

Their number is 713-501-1661....Ginger Hurley

Go to the Boykin Spaniel Breeders Facebook page. Its a public forum, but the admins of the group have to approve every post that gets posted. Requirements to post a litter include 1) all necessary health tests recommended by the Boykin Spaniel Society (BSS) must have been done on the sire/dame. 2) the litter must be BSS registered. Site here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/176785585768336/

I cant emphasize the 2nd point more enough. There are breeders here in Texas that don't register their pups with the Boykin Spaniel Society. The BSS is the original and first registry for the Boykin Spaniel, being founded in 1977. The AKC didnt even recognize the Boykin Spaniel as a breed until around 2010 (plus or minus a year or 2). If you're pup isnt BSS registered, then your pup isnt apart of the oldest registry in the country for the Boykin. And you miss out on all the other benefits the BSS provides for BSS dogs/members only (discounts on health tests, National Field Trials, quarterly Boykin magazine, and more).

I have a Boykin. He's 12 years old, and, even though he has lost a step, is still a killer.

He is an awesome family dog. Fantastic retriever. Super smart (almost too smart). I didn't teach him to be an upland game bird because I never do that. He loves going dove hunting. Only problem I have ever had is that he will occasionally shake one pretty good if it's still running along the ground when he finds it.

He's just a killer. He has killed and devoured at least a dozen rats, one squirrel, one rabbit, about a thousand house flies, and a handful of wasps (which he kills with his paws, not his mouth. At least not any more).

I was in the market for one and got my dog from a guy in Ohio. He sold me one on special because one of his testes didn't drop. Breeder made me promise to get him fixed.

He's small enough to pick up by the scruff, but large enough to have a mean sounding bark.

Best dog I've ever had.
