How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hello OB,

I'm looking to by a gun safe and was hoping to get some more trusted comments than what I find on retailer websites. Not a large number of firearms: less than 10 altogether between various styles, but need to lock them up as my kids are getting old enough to explore. Would like to have some space for more but it's not critical as I'm not an avid purchaser; I'm mostly ok with what I have.

I've narrowed down to 3:

Winchester 12 gun safe
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/winchester-gun-safe-12-gun-ts12-30

Liberty ProVault 12 gun safe
https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/provault-12-gun-safe-by-liberty-with-electronic-lock

Stack-On 18 gun safe
https://www.amazon.com/Stack-18-MB-Armorguard-18-Gun-Electronic/dp/B01DSYHXUY?ref_=ast_bbp_dp&th=1&psc=1

The 18-gun safe is a bit more capacity than I ever envision needing, but I like the extra space for accessories or other items and it's a similar price point.

Would any of y'all have familiarity with these and be willing to share some thoughts or advice?

I have the Winchester but in the 24 gun size. I've had it for a year so far and cant say a single bad thing about it.

18. Always go bigger on safes. I regret not doing so every time I have to dig a gun out of or put one back into the barrel of monkeys my "10gun" safe has become.

I don't have any experience with an of those safes but always go bigger than what you think you need.

For example the 18 gun safe you listed is configured for 9 guns in all the provided pictures. If you have optics on any of your guns divide the nine by half to give you a realistic idea on how many you can fit.

I would also strongly recommend you bolt the safe to the floor. It is surprisingly easy to knock a safe over and use pry bars to pop the door.

The gun count on safes is potentially achievable with single shot shotguns, anything else will lessen the capacity. And 18 gun safe is probably your starting point for 10 long arms.

ETA - typed too slow, see above.

Thank you all. Very helpful advice. The Winchester's are in stock at a local Tractor supply. I'm going to take a look as the 24 is same cost as the Stack-on 18 but won't require shipping.

I got a 24 gun Stack On back when Sports Authority was going out of business. Think I paid like $250. It had guns and a few keepsakes/ammo on the top shelf. Currently it has 9 long guns, 4 with scopes. I have had it up to 12 total when I had 2 additional I was temporarily storing for my dad. It's not too bad with 9-10 guns. It starts feeling pretty full with 12. Especially if they're scoped. If you've got the room for (and the man power to help move) a bigger safe, go bigger.

Just bought the 40 gun cannon from tractor supply right before Christmas. I had a stack-on 18 gun cabinet and it was too small. Went with 40 because, I have 12 long guns. My father-in-law has 5 long that will eventually be mine. Plus my 13 year old son is getting into shooting. I know we will be adding. The 12 fit great on one side with room. Then I have the other side for other storage.

Someone posted a product here recently that is some sort of storage solution for his safes using plastic rods and Velcro. I can't remember the name. You end up removing the gun supports from the walls and then using the rods to store things more vertically against the shelf or ceiling. Makes a bunch more space. I got it for Christmas and my safe is now holding the stated number of long guns, even with some bipod and large scope action

Any idea how long ago it was? It would help trying to narrow a thread search.

I suggested them in a post. They are called rifle rods. I found them on amazon for around $20 for 8 I believe. They help a lot once you start getting more rifles into your safe.

This one is being dropped off Friday. https://www.costco.com/cannon-43.8-cu.-ft.-executive-series-safe%2c-60-min-fire-protection.product.100341405.html

Higher priced than the ones you listed, but I bought it before Christmas for $735 to my door. Might go on sale again if you can wait, and have room.

Did the same thing and got it for $299. You'll get online and see a lot of people talk bad about Canon but so far mine has been great. And don't let the number of guns fool you. It's true. You can usually divide the number by more than half and that's what it will hold. Also, I configured mine to fit my AR pistols on one side with additional space under them to hold documents and other iMportant stuff.

I'll also say that I was never a big "gun guy" but I contracted a disease common around these parts called "Ineedthat-itis". My safe is now full.

Blow your budget and get something that might actually stop a thief.

What area are you in? I'm about to buy a safe from a guy here in Keller that sells out of a warehouse and small store front. Really good prices and friendly guy.

I think it might. Certainly better than a $300 200 lb Bass Pro special.

Winchester from Tractor Supply are good for their cost and installer said more difficult to break in to than most.

I bought the Liberty 18-gun safe as a second to my Browning. It will hold 12 with no problems. 18 would be very crowded, especially if they are scoped.

Just bought a Winchester Bandit 31, 38 gun safe for $750 on a "scratch and dent" sale. Pretty happy with that sized safe for the price
