Saw one on the side of 35 outside of Devine with the leg spray painted orange.

Never seen this before. Is this a new thing being done in Texas? What's the logic behind it?

It is sprayed when a game warden or biologist have taken a sample of it for research.

That's less interesting than the orange mini bears at Philmont.

That's better than the Get Well Soon balloons that are being tied to the road kill deer here in and around Bulverde. Pretty funny, but has started a big uproar on Nextdoor. I got my popcorn!

When the Victoria county biologists take CWD samples they will spray paint an X on the belly. It's for people to know a sample has been collected

I'm pretty sure that's SOP for all counties

But why does it the carcass need to be identified as being sampled? As a warning? If there is concern of an ill animal, why wouldn't they destroy it after sampling?

So someone else doesn't waste their time and effort sampling it again not knowing it's already been done.

Samples for CWD

So if I take the head off a nice roadkill buck for...um..."sampling", do I just spray paint the neck orange to cover my tracks?

So, are they thinking CWD has spread to Victoria Co?

Being done statewide. Buddy of mine in North Texas has 239 CWD samples as of 2 weeks ago. They are taking samples on almost any fresh roadkill they can. They have all sorts of friends and law enforcement acting as spotters.

It is no particular indication of CWD spreading to am area. There are various sampling quotas set up all over the state.

My guess is two different crews. Samplers do their part and county picks them up. Not set up for both.

Nah. Nice buck racks around here don't typically make it overnight. Sawzall head or antlers, be done. No need to spray paint. When the next dude rolls up, he gonna know the antlers are gone.

Yeah, a lot of the biologists live in subdivisions, they are not going to take 100+ deer home. Many have issues with neighbors just temporary having heads in the back of their trucks.

Again guessing but marking helps the next surveyor not waste time an makes it easier for the clean up crew to find them. Deer even 10 feet off the road are pretty hard to spot. Unless looking.

The rib chastises me for this. I can spot a deer as we are driving 70 mph but can't find the stationary remote in the living room

We all see what we are looking for

(After the baby chewed up the remote I bought a new one that has a beeper you can activate via an app)
