Love the story and only makes me want to move this trip up on my bucket list. What made you go with Idaho vs. Colorado, NM, or Wyoming?
Good question. I went to Dallas Safari 2018 (DSC is alway in January) with the specific goal of Elk. After half the day, I was soaked and discouraged from the firehose of options. Every state has vastly different rules, and many many outfitters have moved to, and no offense to anyone, a catalog approach (opportunity guaranteed, 320 class $xx,xxx, 350 class $yy,yyy, etc). That holds very little appeal to me.
That's when I met Kevin Slaughter with Family Expeditions. We started talked about their bread & butter...putting together family trips with hunting aspects, which is very interesting to me. I'm planning on using them to put together a family safari in a few years. They represent outfitters and ranches all across the world and have the reputation of being extremely demanding on behalf of their clients.
I mentioned my elk frustration, and Kevin asked what I was looking for. I told him an adventure. Sure a nice elk would be great, but I didn't want to go to some New Mexico game ranch looking to upsell their guaranteed cattl...ummmm...bull elk. Deep wood, wall tents, free chase, etc. After describing what I was looking for, Kevin paused for maybe a millisecond and said "come with me". We walked straight to Flying B's booth, and the rest, as they say, is history.
