about 3 years ago I was on my way back to Houston from hunting at a buddies place near Winters. On 183 southbound from Brownwood. Approaching Zephyr I got pulled over and given a warning for going 5 mph over the speed limit. Kinda lucky b/c a few minutes prior I was about 7-10 over but knew nearing the town that was too much.
DPS trooper turns around and heads back northbound and I continue thru Zephyr. Hit edge of town and put cruise on 5 mph over and about a mile south of town got hit by DPS again. Given another warning.
they gave these electronically printed warnings so I know they had to be entered into some sort of system.
So if they have a way to see the warnings I would be certain I would have gotten a ticket instead of the second one just minutes apart!!

For both of these warnings and others I've always pulled WAY off the shoulder/road. They always ask and I always say it's to make sure we get both of us well away from the road. I think they appreciate that.

I still have the warnings in my glove box

I believe they way these things are tracked changed in 2018 with the sandra bland act being signed into law.

I got a ticket for 2 mph over outside of Dalhart on a ski trip in the mid/late 90's.

Had to pay a fine
Given a choice between deferred for 18 months or defensive driving and deferred for 6 months.

Couldn't take dd on the web at that time and the instructor NEVER changed tone or inflection so I fell asleep after lunch. Had to take the whole thing twice.

Anyone else ever take the defensive driving you could rent from the movie rental place? Had to watch the video and then call into a 1-800 number and answer questions.
There's now an app you can download, watch, answer questions, and get credit for Defensive Driving.

What I've learned reading this thread is a lot of you guys either:

A) don't learn your lesson.
B) are too hard-headed to learn your lesson.
C) have way more money to throw away on stupid things like speeding/traffic tickets than I do.

One speeding ticket when I was a junior in high school for 38 in a 30. One warning leaving the lot behind the Dixie chicken because "my front tires were just barely over the white line next to a stop sign" (obviously looking for drunks and I wasn't even close). That's it. Ain't got time for tickets and DD, got plenty of other places/things I'd rather spend my money and time on.

Good for you! As long as you move your paw-paw driving butt to the right lane, we're all good.

It's 2004, I'm heading home from College Station to Conroe at about 8:30 in the morning, I hit Plantersrville going about 80 right after it drops to 55mph and blow past a DPS officer, I knew I was busted so I pulled on over while he flipped around. He came up to m window and the normal, "Why are you driving so fast? Didn't you notice the change ins speed?" I said "Well sir, I have no excuses, I just was kind off in space, a little tired and distraught from being in Waco to watch A&M's first loss to Baylor for the first time in almost 20 years. " He quietly took my license and insurance docs to his car and came back after a little with little grin, and then dead pans, "Sir, It seems you have suffered enough so I'm going to issue a warning. Just be sure to slow down and pay better attention." Loss to Baylor was both good and bad ( I would have rather won and paid the ticket.)

How do "don't break the law" people not realize how full of crap they sound when talking about speeding?

Well it is againt the law so there's that. Some people just seem to think they only have to abide by the laws they personally think are reasonable.

I was doing 72 in a 70 just south of Hereford.

You got stopped for doing 2 over?!?

I was stopped and given a warning South of Scotland, Tx for going 42 in a 45. I was driving a 24 passenger school bus to Weatherford for our District golf tournament. The DPS guy said I need to drive the speed limit. I told him, since it was 6:00 am, dark, on a road frequented by deer - I was being cautious, since I had kids in my bus. He did not like that response at all.

I know it is simple to say - "just don't speed, obey the law". I am not a lead foot crazy driver, but when you do 35,000 miles + per year you are going to creep over the speed limit just running with traffic once in a while. Or roll through a stop sign, or go thru a yellow light. Doesn't make you menace to society - just a function of being a road warrior. I am pretty sure that if I had a 15 minute commute etc. I would have had fewer encounters with LEO's.......

Around 13 or so years ago my wife's cousin who's also my good friend "Jake" was working for a rodeo producer/stock contractor based around San Antonio along with his best friend "Steve". They had hauled a load of roping calves and steers to a rodeo in the Valley. On the way back on Sunday, they got pulled over south of Corpus by a very young DPS Trooper and his older, more experienced partner. The young Trooper was going to establish his dominance by making Steve (the passenger) sit in the bar ditch while he read Jake the riot act.

Steve brought it to the young Trooper's attention that he had been directed to sit in an ant bed and asked if he could move, to which Mr. Billy Bob Bad Ass Trooper said no and sit where I tell you. While this is going on, Jake informs the Trooper that some of the stock in the trailer has a slight case of the scours and perhaps they should move away from the trailer to the back.

"I'll stand where I want and you'll stand where I TELL you" declared the young Trooper. Well about that time, one of the calves or steers lifted their tail and expelled what they expel when they have the scours right on the Trooper from about mid torso to his boots.

Jake could not contain his laughter and was bent over in hysterics while the experienced Trooper had to bite his lip and return to their vehicle lest he bust out laughing as well. Around $2,000 in citations were written after that, most of which were dismissed upon talking to the judge.

I'm a law and order every time kinda of guy, but sometimes there are those who wear the badge that could use just a slight lesson in humility. Jake tells the story way better than I ever could, but it cracks me up every time I think about it.

Isn't the law that if a speed limit is not posted that the limit is either 25 or 30? I vaguely remember that being the case.

I think as of 2018 they are required to document the warnings now. I was issued a real ticket this morning for something I had previously been warned about. I was about to get another warning for the violation until the DPS officer saw in his system that I had a previous warning for the same thing. My windows are too dark. So I was just curious if this info stays in the system forever or if there is a time limit before it drops off the radar, so to speak. https://www.newschannel6now.com/story/37221052/tx-cops-now-required-to-give-written-warnings/

Also thought there was a new law that, other than the windshield, you could have windows as dark from the outside as you wanted.

**** I wish! It would help to keep my truck cooler out here on the ROW. After peeling off the excess tint yesterday, I could tell a big difference with heat in my truck. I went 8 years with tint on this truck with no issues. Coming to Del Rio for a project has been real eye opening. The number of police, especially DPS down here is staggering. I'm guessing they need more units for border security or what not. I actually was pulled over again this morning on my way to work by another trooper. He said I had veered over the white line on to the shoulder. I suspect he just wanted to check me out. Nice guy, let me go with a warning.

i believe that is the case. I need to check the actual code again... the catch is that on public beaches where you can operate a vehicle, the speed limit is/was 10mph. That's just plain ole beach, no road. Where I was driving was labeled a street and was paved up until Ike. I'm assuming the DB officer was trying to score overtime by writing tickets under this false code.

We spent 4th of July weekend north of Del Rio on the Devils River with some friends. On the way out there we took US 90 W out of San Antonio. The DPS presence was quite high. Not surprising given the holiday weekend, but also not surprising I suppose given the proximity to the border and the potential illegal shenanigans that goes with that. We took 337 to Rocksprings to SH 41 to IH 10 on the way home and saw nary an LEO.

Please put in bold the part of my post where I condoned breaking the law or stated that I only felt that I had to abide by the laws that I choose.

The reason that they sound full of crap is because outside of new drivers that haven't had time, there isn't a driver on the road that has never broken a speed limit either by accident or on purpose.

There isn't...

Any windows behind the driver can be as dark as you want. The legislature actually changed the tint law from 20% on the fronts to 25% several sessions ago. Windshield can't have any tint below the AS1 line

It probably was noted on their MDT entry. Running the LP through the state system doesn't tell them you have an LTC, but running the DL does.
Does running the LP through their system tell them that you have a medical exemption for tint?

I'm not sure if its law or just how I was taught....but I was told you have to move with the speed of traffic. Going under the speed limit is dangerous just like speeding is.
The reasoning I was told and it makes sense is if you're on a highway and speed limit is 60 but everyone is doing 70 the person doing 60 actually creates a hazard.

I thought of this on our drive back from Florida last week. I was in a 70 mph zone on the interstate. Going about 80 and I was getting passed!! Often...and by a good speed. Of course I stayed in the middle lane or right when only 2 lanes. I started noticing that nobody was going 70

In the middle of BFE? The poor cop probaly wanted a cup of coffee with his morning donut, and the only way to get it is to write a ticket for the income.
