Was a passenger in a mid 70's Bronco in the mid 80's headed east on Hwy 190 just east of Point Blank, TX. Traveling at highway speed of ~65mph. All of a sudden, the rear end slammed on the pavement and the Bronco started sliding off the road with sparks flying everywhere. I looked in the right side mirror and saw the back end was on fire -- and foolishly -- opened the door and jumped from the vehicle.
I escaped injury but only by the grace of God; the careening Bronco almost ran over me after I jumped.
The right wheel bearing froze, which caused the axle to snap at the wheel. The "fire" was simply the rear-end fluid that ignited due to the friction/heat, but it wasn't a gasoline fire that I initially feared when I decided to jump. In hindsight, I should have stayed in the Bronco.
We were only a mile from the two mile Lake Livingston bridge, and things might have turned out very differently if that axle snapped while we were on the bridge.
