South Zone has been on fire where I've been hunting. More birds then I've ever seen on our little 80 acres (gone 3 for 3 on hunts out there and had to restrain myself from burning last tag yesterday), called in over a dozen nice gobblers first week at a couple ranches. I'm saving my last tag for Kinney County if I can hold off, going to try and call one in for the wife tomorrow. Love me some spring Turkey hunting

Thanks! I usually just use my semi auto but my buddy insisted I try his new turkey slayer.
He took a youth model 20ga Remington 870 added a a shurshot synthetic stock and a Burris red dot site with a Camo job from Mossy Oak graphics. It's bad ass shooting tight groups out to 50. Great for run n gun hunting and light weight

Ran across this little scene at one of my job sites today. There was another strutting gobbler off frame to the left. Very habituated group that wasn't at all afraid of people/vehicles.

This was near Bee Caves/Cuernavaca in Austin.

Finally getting out this weekend.

Friend in Cuero said the gobbling activity was peaking Sunday morning. Got in the truck and headed down as quick as I could. Sat down at 4:04 pm and started calling and this guy came out of the hay field followed by a hen 15 minutes later. Hung up when he saw the dekes. He started to head away, but the Longbeard XR #4's to the back of the head at 40 yards did the trick. Done at 4:22 pm.

Just curious... What's your plan for shooting them w/ your bow? Body/vitals or head shots?

I'm headed back out this weekend to try and call one in for my brother. (And maybe bag another for myself)

When you bow hunt them, are you using a portable blind & calling them in?

Cool. I've killed them both ways, so I was just curious as to your approach. They are tough m-fers and can hold an arrow quite well, although I wouldn't say I've had better luck with one method over the other.

the way my buddies place is set up, they come in on their own and we've got a tower blind set up. its not the best way to do it, but with the way this place is set up, it is. hes got birds all over the place

According to TexAgs, all that is required is you would need to be an ammoless quality beer or whiskey drinker with nothing to do to tag along with me. And also have low expectations.

Back at the house, just tucked Mr. Gobbler in on his roost for the night. He was kind enough to gobble every 5 minutes for an hour right at dark just to be sure I knew he was boss around these here parts.

Duel tomorrow at dawn it is.

I got it done on a good gobbler yesterday. Story coming at some point!

Woke up & stepped outside the camphouse to hear my gobbler challenging me at 6:00 AM.
He was actually on the neighbor's property, so I didn't have much room to maneuver. Set up as close as I could to the fenceline not an ideal spot but it was the only place I had any cover.
Gave him a tree yelp to let him know I was there & got the proper response.

About that time I hear the first grunt of a hog about 50 yards upwind to my right. Drifting into view are about 30 hogs & they begin just milling around, rooting. Sun is coming up & Mr. Tom and I start doing the dance & he is slowly but surely coming in. The hogs have drifted off into the brush, unfortunately in the direction of the turkey.

I hit a yelp on the slate & got a thunderous double gobble... one of those hair standing up types. I was certain it wouldn't be long. I shut up and was going to give him the silent treatment. I see some black back in the brush... and the hogs have moved directly between me & the gobbler. After 10 minutes I yelp again & silence. Five minutes later a gobble, this time barely audible and way back into the neighbor's property.
Thirty minutes later, no gobble response at all.... no nothing.

Moved around quite a bit trying to locate another gobbler but it was getting late in the morning & actually jumped up two separate hens walking around. Had to be somewhere around lunch, so had to hang it up.

I hate hogs.
