Any of y'all headed out? Weather should be pretty good & the wind is supposed to lay down.

I have done ZERO scouting & often my early season hunts are just long walks through the countryside yelping at uninterested gobblers. For this reason I pack a little buckshot in case a hog wanders in front of me.

Leaving for Cuero at lunch. Can't wait. It's covered up in birds so I'm hopeful for the afternoon hunts anyways. Hunting with the bow this year so we'll see. Took the boy to Rocksprings last weekend for youth opener but the birds were nowhere to be seen. Good luck!

highvelocity,

I'm curious what you've changed regarding your setup in order to use the bow if anything. I switched to a turkey stool instead of a lounger and have done my damndest to become more proficient with soft calling with a diaphragm, with only slight improvement. Just curious.

15 yard files on youtube is a pretty good watch.

so the area i hunt is out in Chico and we hunt out of 15 foot tower stands in very close quarter feeder set ups. lots of turkeys out there. i'm just hoping for a 20-30 yard shot on them. my buddy who owns the place has had alot of success hunting out of a tree stand for them.

We have had good success out of pop up blinds with shoot through screens on windows.

Probably not hunting them this year. Lost our lease, so no turkey access.

No luck for me... didn't hear so much as a gobble.
As expected, I did run into hogs & managed to kill three shoats with my shotgun.
Saw about 100 more hogs on top of that.

I'm very tempted to invite some OB dudes down to do some pig killing.... it's getting ridiculous.

The first two I got a double:

The pigs have rooted out pretty good around a telephone pole. They like the creosote.

Another single I got:

This morning I found the lair of the pigs, jumped at least 70 in a Yaupon thicket. This is their wallow, ranges from 10-15' wide by 40' long. Every tree rubbed with red clay, the ground is barren.

I've already received some DM's with willing guns. If interested please send me some info. It may take a while to respond, but I'll get back with you. One hour south of Austin, one hour east of San Antonio.
I'm not sure if I'll do this or not, but these pigs are really pissing me off.

Took my son a youth turkey hunt this weekend close to Kerrville. Was the first time turkey hunting for both of us, we saw some out of shotgun range, but got them to talk to us and watched them struting around, was pretty cool to see. We defininetly want to do more turkey hunting now.

Was in the woods at 6:30 am on Saturday and didn't see a bird all day. It was 5:50pm when compliments of a cow, we heard our first shock gobble. 2 minutes later it sounded like the neighbor got him.

Got back in the woods with my buddy Sunday before sunrise and aside from a shock gobble in response to the coyotes at first light, all was quiet. At 10am, we split up and went our separate ways. I got set up in the woods at 10:28 and let out one series of soft yelps on the box call. Waited 15 minutes and repeated a few soft clucks and yelps on the Twisted Sister Crystal. A few minutes later this big boy let me know he was coming. I responded with a soft yelp and then shut up. He showed himself right in front of me coming down a small hill at 130 yards in full strut. What a show to watch him close the distance over the next 2 or 3 minutes, switching between displaying and closing the gap. He came in with a hen trailing him but he just could not stand seeing that jake over the mating hen! Aside from my son's first bird, this was my most memorable hunt. Even had some time to do a little shed hunting. Best time of the year to be in the woods imho!

Archer County. We had a ton of birds during deer season. Hopefully they didn't scatter too far from our place.

Yes sir, the bird was all his! All I did was the callin'. Posted about it here:

We hunt on the ground with no pop-ups. My boy is going to be a much better woodsman than I. Unless they're itty bitty guys, that's my recommendation. Part of what I love so much about spring turkey. You are immersed IN nature! We had squirrels, two coyotes, turkeys and deer all within 30 yards of us this weekend.

Look forward to the report! Best of luck!

Headed out today after a half day at work. Plan to drop the in laws off at their spots and cruise around in the Ranger, drink beer, scout birds, and hunt hogs.

I'm not really much of a turkey hunter but this is one of my favorite, most relaxing, hunting weekends of the year.

There are no birds in Chico, none at all! The only things we have around here are rock trucks, water haulers and the occasional meth lab.

Some of those winter flocks get pretty big. I'll be chasing them around in that area quite a bit.

I have a buddy flying in from South Carolina to hunt with us the second weekend of the season. He does pretty well in turkey calling competitions throughout the year and is incredible to listen too. I'll take my calls out opening weekend and then when he shows up... I leave them at home and let the pro handle it. I get to thinking I'm pretty good and then listen to him and it's like we're not even calling the same species.

Good luck. My only advice would be to call as little as possible and be still. It seems like new turkey hunters always expect the gobbler to make a bunch of noise gobbling on his way in.... and it doesn't work like that all the time. They can be sneaky when they want to!

Been out working on fence all morning, heard turkeys making a ruckus down by the creek. Gobbled back at them and got a few shock gobbles. Later saw a turkey hen in the yard. Love is in the air, I suppose.

Our season was shortened by a week, and opens on a Monday this year. As hard as these Easterns are to hunt, the short season will make it harder. I hope to make it out for two of our three weekends this season, but work has me pretty busy lately. Going to try and get my boy on one, but won't push him if he decides not to take a shot. He's only 7, and is still a little scared of the recoil. A good popup and some DSD decoys, and it should be a fun hunt.

Our family got three last weekend. Back in the blind this morning. Called in four Jakes. They hung around for a solid hour. Waiting on a mature bird.

GOBBLER DOWN! Craziest turkey hunt I've ever been on. Packing this beast out, story to follow. Holy crap what a morning!!!

So I hit the woods about 6:30 & began trying various locations to get birds to shock gobble or respond to yelps on the box call. After about two hours & not so much as a peep I was pretty frustrated. In addition to my barred owl call, there had been numerous coyotes, hawk screams, barking dogs & crows that could have caused a turkey to gobble.

About that time, I was sitting down & a boar came right at me. I had the wind & he just didn't see me. He probably would have gone right by me but I wasn't going to let that happen. Being pissed, I gave him a face full of shot at 25 yards. He spun around quickly & appeared unharmed. (he was a good 150#) Immediately after I shot a faint GOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLE! A shotgun blast was apparently what it took to get these Toms to shock gobble!

I packed up & headed towards the sound got as close as I dared & waited 15 minutes before I yelped on the box call. Ten minutes go by & a lone hen comes silently through my setup paying no attention. I let her get some distance from me before I yelp again. More time passes & finally I hear a response gobble. I wait 10 more minutes & another hen comes through. I again let her go & then wait before yelping. 10 minutes & another gobble, closer this time.

30 minutes must have gone by, no sound no nothing. I stretch my legs & sit back down. Not 5 minutes later I begin to hear yelping in the brush. I work the slate very quietly every 10 minutes. Finally 8 hens drift into the clearing with two strutting gobblers in tow! The hens made a beeline to my decoy & I put up my call. The gobblers followed behind while the hens circled the decoy & began to give the plastic imposter the works: Pecking, bumping, fluttering wings at her. This got the Toms pretty worked up & they really put on a show, drumming, gobbling & strutting in pirouette. I had no shot as they were all flocked up around my decoy about 15 yards away. I was smiling from ear to ear this was awesome!
Finally after nice show, one gobbler drifted off to the side & I let him have it. He went down flapping & the other birds seemed incredulous! They stayed in the area & the other Tom kept strutting until I stood up.

This was a two hour setup & I got a total of 3 gobbles until they were right on me at the decoy. This was by far the longest it has ever taken me to call one in & many times I thought about picking up and moving. Patience rewarded me with a great scene at the end. 19 #, 9.5" beard, 1" spurs. It's a good thing that hog came out!

Gobbler still strutting after I shot:

Also to add: This was my first time hunting with my new Alps Grand Slam Turkey Vest.
Five freaking stars. It's pricey but it was worth it IMO.
Spots for every call, cell phone, shotgun shells, Nalgene. Camelback holder, game bag, VERY thick cushion & angled legs/bracing for back support. There is no way in heck I could have sat as long as I did without that back rest.
