Massive bonehead move by a friend of mine who is a CHL holder. He had a loaded 9mm in a locked case in one of his bags. He didn't get arrested but did get detained and released in a hour or so.

Anyone ever done this or have a good attorney to make sure he dosen't get sent down the river?

My cousin did this not too long ago. Not arrested and they let her husband take the gun to the truck before eventually boarding their flight. She did receive a $5,000 fine from TSA though. Max fine was $13,000 I believe. Not sure on lawyers...don't think they hired one.

Same story but don't the exact fine yet. Biggest concern is staying off no fly or other lists.

Cops told him that a law was passed last year that took effect December 31st preventing him from being arrested because he had a CHL. New TX law I guess since this was in Austin.

If he's tsa precheck or global entry, expect to lose it.

Close. Family vacation. Two fully loaded Wilson 1911 mags that fell down and hid in the bottom of my backpack I use as my range bag.

They went back and forth (TSA agents), ultimately just confiscated both and let me go on through. Wife was not happy with me....

I had a friend who told a story about a friend who found his pistol in his bag AFTER it had been through security. They just had missed it. He chose to go back to security and tell them he had a gun in his bag. Doesn't sound like he did it very smoothly. Ended up with guns drawn on him, clearing the area, etc.

What would be your choice in that situation? Stay quiet and get to your destination puckered up the whole time? Admit it? Have thought about it many times and don't know what I would do.

Every airline has different rules. Southwest doesn't require gun and ammo to be separate, just not a loaded firearm. Last several times i've flown with a firearm, gun and ammo were in the same case, but firearm was not loaded.

I am surprised that CHL is not suspended for a period of time.

The only right option, in my opinion is to leave the airport, put in vehicle or hand off to a friend, go back through security. I never ever arrive at the airport early enough to do this.

you could just carry it on to your destination (sweat/pucker factor high) and mail it back to yourself or check it correctly on the return flight. Maybe disassemble before doing this, and throw all your ammo in the trash. You could go outside security to post office kiosk/mailing station and mail it to yourself and go back through security. You could hide it in a potted plant or something and come back and get it later (super sketch). Do they still have lockers at airports? You could also wipe it down and throw it in the trash (probably what I'd do). I can't imagine what kind of trouble you'd get in if they grabbed you with a loaded weapon on your person while you were on your way down the jet bridge

I found 6 live .308 rounds in my backpack once I arrived at my destination (Puerto Rico). I did not try to get them back home!

I flew to Wyoming for a hunt on United and they did not require gun and bullets to be in a separate case either. I had the 300 win mag and two box of shells in the same case.

Funny story: When I checked it I opened it and ask the lady if she would like to see that it was unloaded by pulling the bolt out. She said, "Hell son I know nothing about guns I wouldn't even know what you are showing me." I thought well maybe you should find a different area to work.

depends on the gun and the flight. A last minute flight from Houston to Dallas probably costs more than my Shield

Evan was Class of '74 and passed away in 2012.

Barry Switzer did it when coaching the Cowboys. Same deal - had put the gun in the bag and forgot it was in there. For any Ticket listeners, the Barry "Oh My God" drop you hear from time to time was him recounting the story and the moment that security found the gun.

Not a gun but I did get nailed with a folding pocket knife with a 3" blade in my backpack. Had no clue it was in there. Funny thing is I made it through security in Houston no issue. It was coming home from Wichita were I got nailed. They let me mail it back to myself through some TSA mail service and let me go on through security.

By the way, in about 1990, I knew a guy from Arizona who took his handgun out of his backpack and put it into his checked in luggage before checking in at the airport in Arizona. He was apprehended very quickly and the airport security held him until his airplane was ready to leave and then escorted him to the airplane.

He said that in Arizona at the time, it was no big deal. All they would do there is have you take it back to the car.

Can't agree with this enough! They asked to search my son's backpack right as I realized that he was using his hunting backpack as a carry on. Thankfully, all that was in it were some spent shell casings and a small folding knife he forgot to take out. There was some pretty serious pucker factor as they slowly went through each pocket though.

50 years ago, all you supposedly needed to do was to carry your firearms onto the aircraft and hand them to the pilot to keep for you until you were getting off of the airplane.
