Redfishing Port O'Conner at dusk with the family and hitting them hard as they pop the water. I don't get to fish for redfish much, and I always remember that time.

having my 4 year old in the blind with me this season. We didn't shoot anything, but it was really cool having him out there with me

1st time to take my daughter fishing at 4yo in the neighborhood pond. Was a short trip but a good time.

And then last trip to Rockport when she caught a trout only to have it stollen by a dolphin.

Fishing with my grandfather at Hatchet Lake Lodge in Saskatchewan for a week when I was younger. Single greatest fishing trip I have ever been on.

One of my favorites is from my deployment to Panama. On a day off some of us were diving and snorkeling. One of my buddies comes to us and says he needs help retrieving a fish he speared with a Hawaiian sling. He said it was a big fish but he didn't know what kind. Five or six if us grabbed our masks and snorkels and our Hawaiian slings (we were all poor Army guys, couldn't afford a real spear gun) and followed him. When he locates the fish and points it out to us, it was a huge Barracuda and it was a bit angry because of the piece of metal rod sticking through it about 4" from its tail! We left and came back with a real spear gun that our dive instructor borrowed from his neighbor.

Best outdoor experience... hiking Mount Tallac in South Lake Tahoe and getting near the summit where the trail up the cliffside was completely obstructed by ice and snow due to the high altitude... it became a game of side shimmying on the cliffside... literally scaled a damn cliff before the trail finally somewhat flattened out to reach the summit. What an experience (and view!). Highest elevation point at Lake Tahoe, believe it was close to 11,000 feet. The trip back down was scarier than the ascent, tbh.

Best hunting experience... too many to name just one, but overall nothing beats that feeling of adrenaline when a huge buck comes wandering into your line of sight and getting ready to take that shot.

first time camping with my parents when i was 5. we were traveling through colorado and stopped to camp expecting decent weather. turned out the temp dropped like crazy and then it dropped 2 feet of snow. ive never been so cold. woke up the next morning and was the only "happy camper" running around and playing with snow. my parents just threw all the wet tent and bags in the back of the car and drove straight home, cancelling the rest of the trip. good lesson- always be prepared.

Best hunting experience was shooting my first buck with grandpa a month before he passed away, with the only gun he ever got to give me. I was 8 at the time but would do anything to get one more hunt with him.

I was able to hunt moose in Alaska in the Yukon River delta. My synopsis from the 2017 Western States hunting thread:

"Three idiots flew 3,000 miles then motored upriver 70 miles into the middle of nowhere in a home-made boat in search of moose. They DIY hunted and killed 3 moose."

Yearly hunt and sausage making with 4 generations of family.

Fishing for Bull Reds with my Bride in Venice LA, in May, 2017 was pretty flipping memorable. There are folks here with way more experience fishing than myself, but I have never seen redfish swarm bait like that and those were the biggest redfish I've had the opportunity to catch.

Hard to pick just one.

Taking my kids fishing at the Bush school and having Barbra Bush come out and visit with us was pretty memorable. First redfish on the fly comes to mind as well.

Most memorable hunt is definitely the first dove hunt I took my children to. So hot. Knocked a few birds down and they both helped clean them. Good times.

Turkey season 2015....guiding my 11 year old son in a late season morning hunt...we get a late start and get to our destination (a criss-cross of two senderos, one of which leads down to the creek that runs through our lease about a hundred yards away). As we slowly arrive at the criss-cross, we peak our heads down toward the creek and see that turkeys are already on the ground...we decide to improvise and tuck in to the brush and head up the sendero a couple hundred yards and set out the decoys once we are over a little rise and have no chance of being seen by the turkeys at the bottom. We get settled and wait about 10 minutes before I start hitting the box call...after a couple of calling sessions, we finally get a response and the back & forth gets heated....the toms go quiet after a while and i figure they have finally seen the decoys and are getting close. We keep gently scratching the box and they keep responding.......finally my son sees the three toms coming in from his left but they haven't made it to our shooting window....after another few minutes they are in the lane and before i can ask my son if he's ready to shoot, he fires the 12 gauge and takes down his first spring turkey....great hunt and great lesson for my son teaching him to improvise and never give up when things don't start off as planned.

PS..had almost as much fun mounting the tail feathers, beard and spurs with him....

The past two deer seasons getting to hunt with my father and my son.

Don't get to go camping a whole lot. So pretty much any time I get to go out and take my son to enjoy the time and place.

My favorite was fishing the Pomeroy Lakes in CO two summers ago. Watched a 20" cutthroat swim out of the depths, grab my fly, and swim back down with it. Five minutes later had him on land. It was the first fish of the day, with others to follow. The scenery, the drive up the rough mountain trail, all of it was awesome!

Getting to teach my kids how to shoot - even though its only a pellet gun right now.

Fishing in Port Aransas off of a dock of all things. A company my dad worked for had a bay house down there when I was in junior high. He took my friend and me one weekend. Well, we got there about 3 hours before sundown and weren't getting any bites. After dinner we went out to try our luck again under the lights. About 9-10 pm, the trout started biting. Then for the next 4 hours it was game on. We could throw any soft plastic we wanted and catch a fish on every other cast. It was insanity.

Catching 250 fish and 5 - 8+lbers topping out at 11.5lbs in 3.5 days was pretty nice.

First buck my son took with me in the blind.

Going deer hunting with my family (father and brothers) for the first time. It didnt matter that we didnt see anything or that I was freezing. Just felt good to be able to go out with everyone. That also happened to be the last time that all of us were able to go deer hunting together.

Probably not the best memory but definately one of the most memorable..


It starts with us kayaking through the channels of back lakes in the Lavaca bay one morning last summer.

The sun was just starting to rise as we moved through a pocket that was about 15 yds wide and 18" deep, salt mud bottom like quicksand.

We see a large wake on the right side of the pocket so we hug the reeds to the left.
Suddenly, the wake swirls and is now headed toward us.

Just as My friend passed it, a monster gator pushed up out of the water and lunged, getting about 2' from the stern of his kayak. Its entire head to her front feet came out of the water, Mouth wide open, growling like a lion.
It's mouth as long as a grown mans extended arms.

My buddy looks back sees nothing but teeth and is on plane immediately.

The gator was now feet from my right side. I yell and slap my paddle against my kayak. The gator sinks and the bubbles disappear. I'm not sure where she is and I still need to straighten the kayak and get out of this pocket.

I decide to make one large paddle on the right side to align myself with the exit of this pocket. One stroke and I'm gone.

I Don't know if she followed us because I never looked back. We paddled for another mile before stopping to collect ourselves.

Shook for about 2 hours after that. Every mullet splash the remainder of the trip gave us chills.

Went on to finish the day with a Texas slam

My family has never been much for hunting or camping. When I was in college the guy I was dating owned some private land with a small lake. The best memory I have is learning how to fish and shoot for the first time. I caught a tree branch more than once and got burned by a bullet shell that bounced back into my shirt, but still the best memory EVER

Taking my 11 and 12 year old sons on their 1st dove hunt. It was in Zapata Co. about 6 miles from the Rio. Covered up in birds and they can't hit hardly any. My 11 yr old some how loaded a shell into his magazine backwards.

So I am tearing down his 20 ga in the field, and have his plug and spring out on the ground. Birds are almost landing on us. I look over at my 12 year old. He is shooting non stop and looks like he is standing on yellow carpet because of all the empty hulls. Huge smile on his face.
I look up at my 11 yr old and he is crying because his gun is in parts and birds are trying to land on him.

I will never forget that day and nither will they.

Been hunting and fishing with same group of guys since the first one of us got a driver's license at age 16. We all turn 51 this year and we're still at it. Mostly just bird hunting now with a deer trip thrown in around the Christmas holidays. Good fun.

Spent a Saturday afternoon with my dad when I was about 10 floating in a small pond at my grandfathers house clearing out some water moccasins. I was blowing them to kingdom come with a .410. My dad took a 22 rifle and snapped a little one in half like it was a pencil.

I'm excited because of my dad's aim - floating in a flat-bottom no less. And he acts like "It ain't nothing. Just another day at the office."

My Favorite Outdoors Memory involved Warriors Weekend in POC.

I was accompanied by two warriors who had served during the Iraq conflict - both had sustained injuries serving our country.

They were both great guys - to make it more, fun, though, we saw birds hitting about 500 yards from the nearest shore. My thought was "probably gaftop - but why not. Theyll have fun"

Immediately hooked up. I mean, the boat even out of gear yet i believe.

It was a big pull - i thought it was a shark because of the weight behind it, but, after a few minutes of it not cutting the line i realized we where on a big jack. What started as calm water turned into waves - we chased that thing around for 45 minutes and covered more then a mile and a half.

The soldier was finally able to muscle the jack up to the surface after about an hour.

I will never forget:
1. The look on the soldiers face when we caught it
2. The damage it did to the cheapy lews spinning reel (nothing against lews - this was the $30 model). You know how when plastic bends back and forth it turns white? The reel seat was white
3. The look on his comrades and fellow soldiers faces when we pulled in to weigh it in. Huge whoops and hollers!
4. Driving around town with the jacks tail sticking up and out of the bed of the truck for good measure. usually we practice catch and release with the jacks - but the soldier was eligible for a prize so we had to weigh it.
