What are the chances of getting drawn for an Aoudad hunt? I would rather not spend several thousand to go on a guided hunt for them. Also when applying as a group and one gets drawn does that mean the group got drawn? Maybe I missed the answers to this on the TPWD website. Any insight from folks here who have tried and failed or been successful?

Yes you put in for exotics over the summer and the odds increase with years of added preference points. First year you can still get drawn, while not likely it is possible. When a card is drawn everyone on the card is now a Hunter.

Thanks for the info. I have decided to stop waiting for someday and start trying to get out and do some of these drawn hunts. Figure it will be easier to get to here in the home state.

Yes, if you apply as a group, you all will get drawn together.

I've been applying for the aoudad hunts for 18 years and I've never drawn.

I would call Palo duro state park and Caprock canyon sp and see if they offer standby hunts and how full they are typically. I've been told by several people up here that palo duro has more goat tags than available hunters fwiw.

I was wondering how the standby worked. I will call and check.

Hoping i have better luck. But kf not at least it supports conservation efforts in state

New Mexico has OTC tags for some units

A buddy and I got drawn for Devils River SNA this year for Aoudad and are going in January. Both on the same application. Odds are about 18:3000 for that hunt. Varies every year by location. Odds are better than the lotto but don't get your hopes up. We got lucky. Some hunts have standby potential but that also varies. DR SNA doesn't have stand bys but it is out in the middle of nowhere by Del Rio so it would be a lot of effort to get a slot. You can always call the Ranger at the park. They are ultimately in charge so they might have some changes.

According to the Ranger at DR SNA every hunter on the application gets a partition to hunt.

Not to sidetrack the thread but related-

I know with National Park Hiking Passes that have a draw. Person A can be the lead person of the group containing Person B,C. But B can also be the leader of another group containing Person A and C.

Is that the same with TPWD draw hunts?

No if your name is on a card it can not be on any other card. They will toss it and keep the fee

Took me 19 years, IIRC, for the tag I drew on the 2nd draw in Palo Duro in early 2016. Took a 26" ram and a 21" ewe.

Great write up. I'm planning on putting in at each of the locations that has Aoudad. Am I right in thinking that boosts the priority points?

You only get one PP per category.

There are some unguided/semi-guided hunts in West Texas that I've scoped out to possibly do in the future. Not super cheap from what I've found but semi-reasonable if you just have to scratch the itch of glassing for sheep in desert mountains.

I apply for all the public aoudad hunts in the meantime anyway, $3 bucks a pop you may as well.
