Wife is due in March with our son. Looking to buy an heirloom / high grade .22lr for him to hold on to and hopefully pass on to his kiddos someday. Preference is for a single shot / bolt action, wood stock.... but finding a rifle in that pattern with a nice stock is like finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

What does the OB recommend? Trying to stick around $1k

I gave my boys CZ 452s for their "lifetime" rifle. They had the cheap Crikkett as a starter. I just picked up a Henry Pump .22 for myself because I wanted something different than the tired 10/22s. Most Henry's are near heirloom quality. My brothers gave their boys Golden Boys in .22

Sounds like you need to look at older guns.

Get one of those engraved henry's.

Not against firearms manufactured outside the country but one for this reason has to be american made imo.

Dial up a few custom manufacturers in the states and see what they have to offer

I bought my daughters matching CZ 455 Lux rifles. Put the Leupold 6x scope that was originally on my grandfather's .243 on one, left the other open sights.

Agreed. Best American made 22 today.

I'll throw the Winchester 63 in the mix. It's an old school semiauto takedown with a buttstock tube feed. Well built and very precise. You'll need every bit of your budget for a really nice one.

This is the one I thought of as well but doesn't sound like he wants an automatic.

OP, what about a rolling block instead of bolt action?

Really cool guns too. Would love to have one.

There will always be a latest greatest precision/ tactical model coming out. Most become insignificant with time. There will never be another Winchester, Colt, Browning, etc. To me, that's an heirloom gun.

Marlin 39A. I found an early 60s model for my son and it's his favorite gun to shoot.

Forgot to mention.

You can purchase a henry then send it in to henry and have it custom engraved. The instructions are on their site. If u do this, read the instructions b4 u buy. They are rather specific.

All of the boys in my family get or are getting Lever Action 22s from Henry. My son will get his next year.

After that their first deer rifles have gone different directions, but my boys will be a single shot Henry Youth in .243 with a walnut stock. I was going to get it in .223 but my Uncle convinced me to get it in .243.

So, there you go.

Like the look of those CZs. That's the quality and polish I'm looking for.

Might be odd, but, I'm really wanting to find something without a magazine. A true, single shot rifle. Grandad had an old Winchester 67 that I always loved shooting. Hoping to find something similar, but with a nicer stock. If it doesn't exist, something like one of those CZs would work.

I bought my boys a Henry golden boy and I was able to pick a custom serial number. I went with our last name and their birth year for the serial #. Really cool deal that they run from time to time.

Really like this idea. If I could swing that with our last name and his DOB, it'd be pretty special.

This is the site that I used:
https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/category.cfm/sportsman/create-your-own-henry-heirloom

They run the deal 1-2 times a year. I think I paid $475ish for a 22 lr golden boy.

The CZs have a blank mag that essentially turns it into a single shot, if that helps.

You might see if yo can find a Weatherby MK XX II. This is an Anschutz 62 action in a nice Weatherby stock. More accurate than the CZ .22's, and fairly lightweight too. In case you are not familiar with Anschutz, they make the most accurate .22 rifles in the world. The great majority of the rifles you will see at the Olympics and World Cup are Anschutz 52 actions. AFAIK the MK XX II is no longer made, but a nice one would be worth your time to investigate.

Be aware that there is an earlier version that I believe is a semi-auto made in Japan. Also a very nice rifle, but not what you are looking for.

The Remington 541-S or 541-T were mighty nice looking rifles. Still seen at gun shows.
Or any version of the 581's....plain, but solid.
