I know where they come from, so already pretty dated. A snake being listed in a county isn't particularly exciting. It is handy to know they are recorded in the county, but then you have to know their habitat.

Take Dallas County--Rat snakes and copperheads are a dime a dozen, and they can be reported anywhere in the county. Go to anywhere around Joe Pool/Cedar Hill SP, rattlesnakes may be about the most commonly spotted snakes (Cedar Hill SP has a crap ton of rattlesnakes). But outside that escarpment zone area of southwest Dallas County, you don't find rattlers. There are some legit Cottonmouths throughout PARTS southern Dallas County. I get tons of cottonmouth sightings around White Rock Lake, we'll just say they are as legit at the mountain lions.
I live north of White Rock by Woodbridge golf course and have only seen 1 moccasin. Seen tons of water snakes but its very rare to see moccasins. This is in Dallas/Collin county so what your saying makes sense. This is an area full of ponds too

Man I forgot about that place since I haven't been there in a while. One of the few places where I have seen more venomous snakes than non. If you ride there in the early morning of spring it would not be unusual to see 5-10 copperheads and water moccasins. Always with my luck a moccasin would be crossing the path during some switchbacks. Rode Evil Knievel style once or twice

Side note, if your wife has a huge phobia of snakes it is not a good place to take her to get into trail riding.

I think there are two things to take away from this thread:

1) 12fmane knows more about snakes and their distribution than anyone on here, period.

2) the majority of water moccasin sightings are not actual cottonmouths, but some species of water snake.

Without a picture it's perfectly legitimate for anyone to question the posters claim. I don't care if you have been outdoors your entire life and know snakes, it is a fact that most people have a hard time identifying venomous cottonmouths vs a myriad of water snakes.

I don't get it... if you follow any of the snake threads, you would have 50+ examples of people incorrectly identifying cottonmouths. The proof is in the pudding. People that spend a lot of time outdoors aren't always experts at the outdoors.... myself included.

I don't get why this is such a big deal with you. Does it personally offend you that people are questioning a snake ID?

Get over it. It's not that big of a deal.

The OB is getting really good. I can't tell sarcasm from being serious anymore.

Once again, the OB doesn't disappoint.

I'm one of the ones who has correctly identified them all as rat snakes.
