I'm not sure if that map has the distribution right.
I know for a fact an Irish cowboy got killed on a cattle drive crossing the Nueces River in South Texas by a bunch of cottonmouths.
It was after a flood and the snakes had swarmed together as they typically do. His horse spooked and I think he got struck 30-40 times.
The feral hogs in South Texas have altered the distribution of cottonmouths as well as causing rattlesnakes to stop their rattling.

This is the OB. They love snakes almost as much as their wives. Hell, some may prefer their wife get their head chopped than a snake.

As he was just about to post the pictures another one came up from behind and WHACK! Down goes Ag000Ag.

That's when the attack happens. Not from the front, but from the side...from the two cottonmouths you didn't even know were there.

I really wish he had! Not because I don't believe him, but because I'm ready for you guys to eat crow.

This board has become so damn cynical! I took two different summer field classes at the TTU Junction Campus. Every year the Herpetology class would collect Cottonmouths in Kimble County.

Well, that's about as gruesome of a way to go as there is.

It is ironic that the outspoken character of Augustus McCrae is partly based on the life of Texas cattleman Charles Goodnight, a man who knew the natural world and would have been among the first to set McMurtry straight.
This is where I quit reading. Gus was based on Oliver Loving and Call was based on Charles Goodnight. If the author can't even get that one simple fact correct then let the rest be lost with it.

I've always called BS on the roping steers with the lightning horns.

I'm about 100% sure that the poster who originally referenced Lonesome Dove was being sarcastic.

What does yellow mean. And how did DeWitt get rid of them?
Yellow refers to new confirmed counties since the last census and DeWitt probably does have a few, but most of the county is poor habitat for cottonmouths.

Look, just because it had a white mouth, retractable fangs, and you are a DVM does not make it a cotton mouth.

But personally I'd have killed it regardless.

That shows them all the way down the coast thru Aransas, San pat and Nueces counties. Didn't think we had them anywhere close to here.

Definitely no shortage in Refugio County, so I'm not surprised about their neighbors.

The photo of this rat snake was taken by a friend of mine on the South Fork of the Guadalupe. He's a local photographer and happens to be an Ag so you can take it to the bank! Probably ~90 miles west of the OP.

No one is saying it is impossible. They just aren't common in the area and we've all seen enough mis-identified snakes to be a bit skeptical. I wouldn't be surprised if the OP was right, but I would also not be surprised if OP was wrong. A photo of the snake would put it all to rest.

I just think it is a bold statement. And since I have lived around that area and have personally killed 3 in one day at Brooks in South San Antonio I find the statement to be funny. But what will be even more funny is to watch everyone pile on! Just west of San Antonio we kill them on a daily basis when they get close to the houses, we get all varieties and when I see them I kill them. Don't give a flip what anyone else thinks either. But let the fun begin!

All varieties of snakes. Lots of copperheads and rattlesnakes and a few coral over the past few years.

How is it bold? In that area they are more or less confined to watersheds and riparian areas as there are obviously fewer wetlands. Medina being one of those.

The map is a nice visual, but not always particularly accurate. This is not an issue I would argue with 12FMane on.

So do we apply that same rationale to the mountain lion map as well ?

Note I have never gotten particularly attached to the mountain lion range map, other than to point out it is pretty limited in it's interpretation......but the snake maps typically have a higher simple size.

I think there are two things to take away from this thread:

1) 12fmane knows more about snakes and their distribution than anyone on here, period.

2) the majority of water moccasin sightings are not actual cottonmouths, but some species of water snake.

Without a picture it's perfectly legitimate for anyone to question the posters claim. I don't care if you have been outdoors your entire life and know snakes, it is a fact that most people have a hard time identifying venomous cottonmouths vs a myriad of water snakes.
ursusguy

I know where they come from, so already pretty dated. A snake being listed in a county isn't particularly exciting. It is handy to know they are recorded in the county, but then you have to know their habitat.

Take Dallas County--Rat snakes and copperheads are a dime a dozen, and they can be reported anywhere in the county. Go to anywhere around Joe Pool/Cedar Hill SP, rattlesnakes may be about the most commonly spotted snakes (Cedar Hill SP has a crap ton of rattlesnakes). But outside that escarpment zone area of southwest Dallas County, you don't find rattlers. There are some legit Cottonmouths throughout PARTS southern Dallas County. I get tons of cottonmouth sightings around White Rock Lake, we'll just say they are as legit at the mountain lions.

You sure those were cottonmouths? They were probably just water snakes. And you didnt take pictures so........
