Yesterday my wife opens the front door to retrieve a package and suddenly slams the door shut and screams "snake",

we live on a green belt and see garter snakes on a pretty regular basis, but rattlesnakes are in the area... I open the door to see what it was and this SOB is coiled up, opened mouth and pissed just from the door being opened. it takes a few seconds to progress through: Not a Rattle Snake,... Not a garter snake... to holy snikey's, that's a cotton mouth.

We're not any where near permanent running water, but with all the rain in South Texas lately, the greeen belt behind our house has been full and moving for at least 7 weeks.

Son of a gun was aggressive as hell, coming at me with mouth opened just for being in the area.

a broom and machete ultimately provided hie demise.

I would guess diamondback water snake, as well.

Water Moccasins help with rodents and bugs around the house, unlike those pesky rat snakes. Should have given it a bowl of milk and its own cubbie with a fresh pillow.

Sorry, didn't take pictures but no question on species. I was surprised to see one here...as to the question " where in south Texas, San Antonio area ( I know not everyone will call that south Texas, but being from Beeville...I still like to say south Texas when I'm talking about where I'm from)

Do you have any idea how many times we've heard someone say there was no doubt it was a cotton mouth only to show pictures of a non-venomous water snake? Wouldn't blame you for killing an aggressive snake, but most people misidentify water snakes. Partly because of their aggressive nature.

Assuming the Medina River drainage? They aren't very common else where in that immediate area.

If you're going to argue that there aren't cotton mouth snakes in SA, you're wrong. I agree that they're rare but they are native.

Look I thought I was posting an interesting event. I guess not. As to my credibility...well, I'm a veterinarian who has treated several dozen snake bites, I lived in Florida for 14 years growing up ( navy brat) , my moms family has ranched in south Texas from Beeville to three rivers since Texas was Mexico, I have seen enough water snakes and cotton mouths to know the difference.

Again, if anyone here can post a link that shows a water snake, or any non venomous snake with retractable fangs, I'll eat crow.

Post a pic of the water moccasin you killed on your front porch in San Antonio and we'll all eat crow.

No, we aren't a bunch of four year olds here. The majority are seasoned outdoors folks who have been around the block a few times and are quite skeptical of certain claims, especially those related to rare instances of venemous snakes showing up where they shouldn't.

That all being said, Beeville ain't exactly cottonmouth central, either.

Please understand that the OB has seen so many rat/water/hognose snakes that have been misidentified that there is a lot of skepticism. That is why we even have a whole thread devoted to it.

It is not impossible it was a cottonmouth. Just kind of unlikely. You could post a pic of the dead carcass and based off the scales and pattern even without a head at all, 12fmane could ID it for you with 100% accuracy.

I'm not sure if that map has the distribution right.
I know for a fact an Irish cowboy got killed on a cattle drive crossing the Nueces River in South Texas by a bunch of cottonmouths.
It was after a flood and the snakes had swarmed together as they typically do. His horse spooked and I think he got struck 30-40 times.
