Until he wounds one, you don't find it and he doesn't want to hunt anymore! Not saying a 223 won't kill deer. But, you need to be a little more open minded about what your limiting the kid to.....

We have killed a bunch of deer with .223. What's the problem? Most of our shots do no exceed 60-70 yard. Never been an issues. He dropped a doe where it stood last year. If you have a good scope and make a good shot with the correct round it should be all you need. Not sure what the issue is here.

No kidding. I have killed more deer with .223 and .222 than all other guns. Getting a smaller and more forgiving gun instead of a shoulder bruiser will teach a kid to shoot better.

My son's bolt action .300BLk is nearly identical to the 30-30 ballistically. Guess that means I can come to The Ranch!

I have 4 kids (3B, 1G) I have 2 of the Mossberg .243 (youth), 1 Howa .243, and just picked up a TC .243 (youth). I just bought rifles only and put the Nikon Buckmasters on all of them. They all seem like pretty good guns and once they are sighted in they do pretty well.

I love the youth models in deer stands. Easy to move around especially if you are sitting with a kid in the stands. I even take them to use sometime because of the ease of use. I was going to go to with 7mm-08 or something like that but I decided I only wanted to keep up with one caliber of bullets!! You can always find .243 and I just buy a bunch of boxes and throw it in each of their hunting backpacks....

Got my 9yr old son a Savage 7mm-08 with the accutrigger compact. He is pretty nails with it but he prefers the Bergara 300win. Hahahaha

All three of my kids shot their first deer with a New England Arms youth single shot 243. Gun still is used and has been loaned out to several youngsters since. Gun is more than sufficient and very affordable.

Thanks for all of the replies guys! Ended up getting him a Savage youth 243 bolt gun. Put a Nikon buckmasters 3-9x40 on it that I had laying around. Should serve him well for the next 5 years or so.
