It's a long shot, I know, but does anyone have some recommendations for overnight horse boarding in New Mexico?

Daughter will be moving two OTTB (off the track thoroughbreds) from Tucson to Amarillo in late November, and it's just a bit too long for a one day trip, so she's splitting it into two days. She's pretty particular about them, so no barbed wire, etc.

She can go I-10 to I-25 to I-40 (Las Cruces/Albuquerque), or she can go I-10 to Las Cruces, then 70/54/I-40, the Alamogordo to Vaughn to Santa Rosa route. Or even Alamogordo to Roswell to Clovis to Amarillo. They are all about the same travel time.

She's tried her usual Internet searches for this sort of thing, but hasn't had good luck. On the way out there, she over-nighted in a place in Alamogordo that promised nice paddocks and covered stalls. When she got there, they told her those were only for permanent boarders. So she's very wary of some of these operators.

Alamogordo or Socorro are about 1/2 way, so she'd like to get that far or a little further the first day.

Thanks in advance.

The couple of times I've done this through Utah and Colorado I've always checked with the county fairgrounds. I would think Mew Mexico would be pretty similar.

If she can make a bit further than Soccoro on I25, I've got an old friend who has a thoroughbred racing outfit on the south side of Albuquerque but I don't know if he does boarding - but I can ask. Also, we have one of our feed dealers in Bosque Farms who would probably have some contacts in that area - maybe down to Socorro.

We traveled Canyon to Scottsdale and back many times. There is a place near Anthony, NM we used. Long drive easier on horses if you can get a second driver......

I agree with Rangelady, get a second driver. I frequently make those 10 hr plus hauls between CStat and Sunland Park, Ruidoso, etc always easier to drive on thru when you are hauling horses. We also use professional haulers for some one-way trips. Should be easy to get a ride from Tucson to Amarillo due to the current NM-TX-OK Racing Circuit. PM me if you need some names. Good luck.

There is an RV park on I25 by US 60 east [N of Socorro] that advertises it will board horses. I want to say it's called Kiva RV park, but I may be misremembering.

This. We do DFW to Paso Robles, CA many summers along with a lot of other folks that make the same haul....about 25-28 hours straight through with a large rig. Everyone agrees it's much easier on the horses just to pull straight thru....not to mention the risks of boarding at a facility that houses lots of transient animals. Get a second driver and use the avoided boarding $$$ to fly the second driver back if necessary.

Not an issue for you.....but good to keep in mind if you're ever doing Texas to the Pacific in the summer with a large horse rig....plan you trip in both directions so that you cross the Mojave about three to seven in the morning.....and avoid a huge risk of blow outs.

That's a 10 hr drive - not too bad. We took a pony horse to Ruidoso from Houston in July one year - hot AF. Was about 12 hrs and he did alright.

I have always gone through horsemotel.com and have had good luck. See http://www.broken-m-ranch.com/id2.html I haven't boarded my horse at this one because it works better for us to go on into Santa Fe but they get really good reviews.

Thanks Harley! Same can be said for dropping off the mountain in August as we head home and you go from 80 degrees to triple digits crossing the Llano Estacado.....always try to leave by 5 am CDT....easier on the horses and rig! Started keeping a thermometer in the rig when we were hauling show cattle all the time. Wow, makes you think!

Amazing how many folks just load up and go. Had some friends that rented a U-haul and moved from central CA to DFW with a two horse in tow. They had a menagerie of horses, dogs, cats and birds. They put the dogs and birds in the cab of the truck and the cats in a carrier in the truck bed. It was the middle of August. They stopped in the middle of the Mojave, and looked in the bed of the truck to find three dead cats. I kind of laughed about the cats but then a month later their beloved horse was struck by lightening in the pasture in Texas.
