I make my gravy with bacon grease, flour, milk, salt and pepper. That's it. It's nice and simple, but it tastes great. It's excellent over biscuits or chicken fried back strap.

That was my Granny's way. She did everything by taste and experience and left no recipe. On any of her cooking which sucks since she was the premier Pie maker in Smith county in her day. 8-10 pies homemade every night.

I thought someone posted there was a spin off of Toms. A former manager started a place.

Brisket House in Houston. They do the Aggie Special, but it's called something else. Never been, so don't know if it's any good.

It is damn good. Our go to for bbq. The 'special' is the 'Toms special' and comes on butcher paper with a pickle, onion, block of cheese, and bread. So damn good. And good sauce.

Believe it or not, one of the best Chicken Fried Steaks I've had in the RR area is at Twin Peaks.
I've also had a good CFS at BC's Backyard Bar and Grill in Cedar Park. It's the old Lone Star Grille on New Hope, if you are familiar with the area.

In the mid-nineties, my goto for CFS in B/CS was Tom's BBQ. It was a massive plate coverer, with good gravy. I miss Tom's!
In the mid-80's for a college student budget, the Cow Hop CFS sandwich and gravy on the fries was hard to beat. Have a pig-out after and you'd be sure to take a good nap in class.

P.s. It's unbelievable that Tom's is no longer.
Smiley was Cheeseburger, Please remind me what they called CFS sandwich??

It's been frustrating me since I posted as I can't remember either. Cowpie was just a hamburger - right? Or was that the CFS - I remember ordering cowpie and gravy on the fries often but I'm thinking that was the hamburger as I had the CFS sandwich only about 1/3 of the time. But, always had gravy on my fries either way.

Never ordered the chili cheeseburger so if that's it I'm just remembering a catchy name.

Walked into Dell's in Big Spring and ordered a cfs. The waitress brought me out my plate.

I said "This isn't what I ordered".
The waitress replied "It may not be what you ordered, but it's what you're going to eat!"

Love that place ....

Try Shannon's in Bryan on a cfs day, or you can get their beef tips on rice.

Yep, and the owner would tell you that himself. I know him personally and they just dont have the time or the space to make a commitment to made from scratch CFS. They get theirs from a distributor prefrozen and basically pull it out of a package and warm it up. I think the only reason he keeps it around is it still sells surprisingly well and he doesnt want to offend long time customers.

If you are eating there, get a regular steak like a ribeye or sirloin. He only buys choice and above so his turn out really well and they dont cost as much as many other places in town.

But speaking of old places in town, anybody remember Ken Martin's in Bryan? They had an awesome CFS and a homestyle yellow colored gravy that was amazing. Had the best dinner rolls in town too, they were massive but still perfectly fluffy and great tasting. Sadly he got cancer and eventually closed the business one of my last years in college, 2012 or 2013.

I was always partial to the CFS at the Longhorn Steakhouse in Bryan. Somebody mentioned TexAZ in Phoenix, that is a legit CFS. Used to go there on occasion when I lived out that way, owners are expat Texans and good folks. TBone Tom's in Kemah is nails for CFS, probably the best around. Helps that you can get armadillo eggs there too, which are fugskin awesome.

I would say Longhorn in Bryan is average. Sodolak's is above average. I don't eat a lot of CFS anymore. White House Cafe in Iraan is right below Mary's. Zentner's Daughter in San Angelo is average, sometimes below average. They have become inconsistent.
