Hunting for deer here in AK is no joke. Very difficult terrain with steep slopes and dense brush (here in SE AK). As you've found out the hard work is getting back. Imagine if that was a 1200lb bull moose.

I really, really missed my deer blind and ranger after about 20 minutes into that hike. Very difficult indeed, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I was thinking about doing a OTC goat hunt in a couple of years but I need to change my workout routine and lose about 40lbs if that is going to be realistic. Elk hunt is likely next on the list, just not in Alaska.

Only suggestions I have are A.) you need some lower scope rings to get that thing down closer to the bore, and B.) your range finder was probably set up for LOS vs. true horizontal distance. For example, on a downhill shot that lases at 300 meters, your really only shooting something at 220 meters (Pythagorus!). So you shot over, based on a 300 m adjustment vs. a 220 m adjustment.

I need to confirm my range finder setup but I believe it is based on true distance and not LOS. That was one of the first things I played with after setting up the ballistics on it. Need to double check though.

Both shots were shooting relatively at the same elevation I was sitting at. Neither shot consisted of any significant angle or was above or below 20' of elevation.

Yeah, need lower ring for sure.
