Add REK, McMurtry and BJS to the good guy list.

My wife's grandad ('44) and REK's dad were cousins. We'd talk to him after shows, have a few signed CDs plus a couple signed cans of Copenhagen. He's pretty laid back.

I've talked to McMurtry after shows about hunting and fishing as he's sipped a Maker's Mark. He looks straight through you when he's on stage but always down to earth.

Mr. Shaver is friendly and humble as all get out.

Saw him about a year ago as well. He sat for the entire set, and mentioned that he had had some type of knee surgery.

I saw him at Music Fest in Colorado. He was clearly on pain meds and told the crowd he had hurt his knee skiing. This was maybe 6-7 years ago. He could barely sing he was so drugged up, but he still put on a good show. Maybe it was just because the crowd was so wild and into it.

He had some good songs but the times I saw him he got so drunk he couldn't stand up. Once he was playing laying down on his back since he was too wasted to even sit.
This made me chuckle.. that's absurd.

I know a famous high school coach who got drunk and laid down on the golf course to urinate....

Laid sideways and whipped it out. Maybe this is normal golfing. I've never golfed. I thought it was funny. Trashy, but funny.

I first saw Charlie open up for Merle Haggard at Floore's Country Store about 20 years ago. I had never heard of him & his song "My Hometown" caught my attention. Some later songs I really enjoyed not mentioned yet were "Beautiful Day" "Feelin' Good" and "Sunset Boulevard".

I thought he was just some guy doing cover songs at the Austin CCA banquet when I first saw him there... shocked it was really him in such a low-key role & thousands just ignoring him.

Sad he's fallen so far..

Nothing new to add, but damn it's hard to believe that recent picture is even him. Saw him many times back in his prime and always enjoyed his shows. Can't believe he's changed that much, but I guess it's been 20 years. I'm within spitting distance of 50, and I hope like hell I don't look like that in 5 years.

My best friend and I caught him standing outside his tour bus after a spring break show at a place (was it Charlie's? that sounds familiar) down at South Padre in the 90's. Anyway we were drunk as hell and probably really annoying but he was really cool to us. He signed my buddy's shirt and wished him happy birthday. I've been to several REK shows over the years and always had a good time.

I've seen Charlie Robison maybe half a dozen times and don't remember seeing a bad show. He was pretty low-key at one of the last shows I saw of his in Belton in 2011 but that really doesn't bother me, I like a good laid back acoustical concert.

Loving County is one of the best songs of all time. Indianola is up there too. My Hometown will always be an anthem in Texas.

I used to think Bruce was better too, but I was wrong.

Plus, he gets a thousand bonus points for absolutely shelling FL-GA Line/bro country for the last 3-4 years.

Now he can fish offshore all week long and not worry about making it back in time for a show.

I like them both and arguments can be made on either side for who is a better songwriter. I don't think there's any argument who has taken better care of himself, but maybe Charlie had to live that life in order to write the songs.

Damn, I'd forgotten about that one. Reminds me a bit of Johnny Come Lately by Steve Earle.

Gonna have to go home and dig out my old Charlie CDs now - I know that's ancient technology, but I'm almost as old as Charlie.

I enjoy both of the Robison's music.

Also, while on the subject, has anyone ever seen Randy Rogers Band live, where it was a great show? I have really only seen them at crappy places like Rodeo venues, where the sound quality sucked. But, it seems that every time I have seen him live, Randy was about 1/2 to a whole beat behind the music, with the lyrics. It really made it brutal to listen to.

If you have Netflix, Norm Macdonald has a new talk show and there is an episode with BJS as a guest. Apparently Norm is a a huge fan of BJS

First time I saw CR was when he opened for REK in Austin about 1995 or 1996. He had long hair. Top half of him looked like Curt Cobain. Bottom half was long and skinny like Dwight Yoakum. He had just released Bandera, and I became a fan.

The last few shows of his I attended at Floore's we're good, but he sure looked tired. I mean physically tired and mentally tired. He played a lot of covers and about half of his own stuff. I began to wonder if he was burning out.

If you think some are being harsh and treating this guy bad...it is nothing like Charlie has treated some who paid good money to go see him. Uninterested is a really good term for his shows from about 97' on IMO. I will never forget the show in Austin at Stubbs, a girl in sandals was standing talking with her friends and Charlie walked over and stepped on her foot. The girl screamed when he stood there with his back heel on her foot. He turned around and just said hey sorry and walked away saying out loud you shouldn't wear sandals bit**! I went to the restroom later and he was still talking **** about anyone and everyone, just a unhappy dude if you ask me.

Bad news hate to hear about anyone not able to do what they love.
My brother has been lead guitar player for Max Stalling, Jamie Richards, Mark David Manders, etc. (currently with Josh Ward) so he played many shows with Charlie. He can fill up a whole night with stories about Charlie Robison playing lackluster, bad shows , being a jerk to fans and other musicians, and being so drunk or drugged he didn't know where he was. I hope this doesn't take him further down the lost highway.

CR is a friend of a friend, and I have joined them at the ranch a few times. That dude takes a lot of pills to get up, then drinks, and takes a lot of pills to go to sleep. That has to take a toll on your body. He's an odd dude.

Saw him a few years ago at a small club in Houston. Looked about 60 lbs overweight and ****ed up. I enjoyed the show tho, feel bad for him. I saw his acoustic show in steamboat 6 or 7 years ago and that was the best show I've seen there in the 5 or 6 times I've gone.

A bit off subject. Believe it or not, he was a hell of an athlete in his. A lot of speed and a big running back. Think he won 10 games as a pitcher. His Dad was a coach. Both brothers were good athletes. Charlie recruited to SWT as a RB.
