Had a cop do a middle of the night door knock like that one time.

I opened the door with my Glock 17 pointed at his chest.

He said he was there because someone reported that my truck had run a red light earlier in the evening. I informed him that he risked his life that night. I called his boss the next day and told him how ridiculously stupid what he did was.

If you're concerned enough about your safety to require you to point a gun at them, why are you opening the door?

If you believe them friendly enough to open the door, why are you pointing at gun at them?

Do you look at them before opening the door?

No, I just blindly opened the door and found a real cop on the other side. I didn't even ask who it was. Just thew the door open and pointed my gun at him.

Trust, but verify with a Glock 17 cocked and ready.

Bro, do you even shoot?

Please describe your particular method to make ready a Glock 17?

You seem very personally disturbed by this thread. Why is that?
Frankly, I'm not sure.

I have a possible answer for you, based partially on your post and partially on spending way too much time on the internet. It's something I've seen a lot on forums over the years when gun or self defense stuff comes up.

There is a sliding scale of preparedness behavior, and we all put ourselves in the middle in what we consider proper or normal level of "being prepared for bad things to happen". To our left (for layouts sake, not political) are people we consider fools because they don't do the same things or are as prepared as we consider ourselves to be. To the right are people we consider nuts because they do more than we do.

For an example:

Hippies who "don't believe in guns"---People who only hunt---Tacticool People you were mocking---

Hippies look at hunters the same way you're looking at some people in this thread. "They're nuts who just want to kill". Likewise, many hunters who only own wood stocked bolt actions view people who own ARs the same way hippies view hunters, and they look down on hippies who are incapable of providing for their own sustenance or protecting themselves. This isn't unique to home defense, I see it a lot with handgun stuff too. Someone may own a handgun and use it for home defense or keep it in their car, but they think anyone who carries one every day is nuts. The guys who carry every day may view a home defense/car carry handgun owner as a unprepared sheep, then turn around and also think a guy who thinks you should carry a spare magazine along with your handgun every day is nuts. Etc, etc, etc.

So if everybody is doing it to everyone else, what's the underlying issue? Having seen it over and over again, I think it's because we are all uncomfortable with the idea that we may be unprepared or incapable of dealing with a traumatic event. So everyone considers themselves properly prepared. That's comforting. Looking down on people you think are less prepared than you is also comforting. It's not comforting to consider that maybe you're not as prepared as you could or should be, so it's much, much easier to make fun of someone who does more than we do as a nut instead of considering the possibility they might be doing something we should consider doing as well to protect our family.

It's not unique to you, or this forum. It's a universal human way of dealing with fear of the unknown, and fear that we are unprepared. I do it, you do it, Joe Blow does it. I don't know you personally so I have no idea if this the only factor causing such a strong impulse to react negatively in this thread, but it fits with what I've seen from other people in other situations, so I think it may be playing a role.

Just something to consider. If we know what makes us react negatively and why, it's always helpful IMO.

On the "why are you too afraid to open your door" front:

This is the next town over from me.

https://www.kcentv.com/article/news/crime/video-group-pulls-guns-on-woman-in-killeen-dogs-scare-them-off/500-493753946

A group of 5 people were arrested for this one. It started with them breaking some glass in the front of the house. One person knocked to see if anyone is home, feigning concern about the broken glass. Once she opens the door, two armed men come around the corner out of hiding and try to force her inside.

Luckily, she's a dog owner and the pups scared off the group of armed men who started the home invasion by one person knocking on the door pretending to be friendly.

We live in a very safe country. But bad things do happen, and when they do happen, the results can be very bad. I don't open the door after dark for strangers. The safety of my wife and kid is more important than whatever that stranger wants/needs, and while the chances of an event like that are slim, the stakes if my family is attacked and it goes wrong are high enough to make that decision an easy one for me. YMMV.

You have to be careful setting traps like that.

Yo Einstein...

It was sarcasm intended to ridicule the poster who decided to show his rear by making a deal out of my use of the word "cocked" when referring to a Glock.

I can't stop thinking about this post and the stupidity it represents.

You do know, don't you, that if your finger twitched and you shot that officer you would spend a long time in prison?

Did his boss tell you that you are insane?

What happens if you do that to someone who responds by shooting you in self defense?

What if they were serving a warrant on some badass and had the wrong address?

The more I think about my post, the more I think it was poorly thought out. I think I have had one person knock on my door in over 12 years. It was in broad daylight, and even then, I was armed...as in, I had my CHL and was carrying. Given the circumstances, i answered. That said, I have a gate, and a driveway that is well over 1000' long. NO ONE comes to the door. That day, I had left my gate open, so I gave a pass. Otherwise, there are only two reasons to knock on my door at any time.....someone that is going to hurt me, or someone that is hurt and desperately needs help. There is pretty much no in between, outside of a few exceptions.
