Hey gents, going to pick up a Remington 270 soon.
I'm historically a duck hunter and have been fortunate enough to borrow family rifles in the past for deer & range time. Time to get my own set up now that my son will be hunting in the coming years & I have property to hunt (married into a good one, Whoop!).

I was going to get a model without the scope, then pick up an a la carte scope. I've been told by a couple of friends not to go with the "scope included" bundles due to quality.

Recs that won't break the bank, but will get the job done and last? I don't really know where to start, brand names, specs, etc.

What's break the bank? You can get decent nikons and leupolds for under 300

I'm a Vortex fan but the others are equally if not better quality. It would help to answer the following.

MRAD or MOA?

What range will you be shooting?

Do you want exposed turrets?

Do you want a reticle with just crosshairs or with markings for windage and elevation?

How bright will it be when you are hunting?

Probably missed something but others will fill in.

I've got an extra set of talley rings for a 1" x 50mm scope for a remington 700 if you need 'em.

ETA: put a Leupold VXII x 50mm on my wife's 721... very pleased with it. Not cheap and not expensive. Damn near sent two rounds down the same hole sighting it in on a lead sled.

Leupold VX3i is a very good scope that is not too expensive.

It would really help if you posted your budget. 300? Or 3000?

I got one for a 308 AR I built a few years ago and I can honestly say that it's the clearest scope I've ever looked through. You can get one for $350-400.

How much you want to spend. A Simmons 3-9x40 will kill all the deer your license will allow. The only time you'll notice a large difference in 90% of rifle scopes is the last 15 minutes of shooting light. Ive got scopes that run anywhere from $50-$500. They all seem to hold zero about the same and honestly I don't notice the difference most of the time.

For a lower end scope I really like Bushnell for the money.

I bought a Rudolph from Eyeguy (Texian Firearms) that I like very well, and it didn't break the bank.

Natchez Supply routinely has some great optic deals, on many brands.
The Bushnell Gold and Weaver 40/44 are identical scopes, made in the Phillipines, and deliver for "budget" scopes under $100

Redfield Revolution $193.00 on amazon.
I like the accu-range reticle myself. Very clear and clean.
Redfield being owned by Leupold with their warranty sold me.

The Oculus scope I got from Bass Pro has served me very well. I think I got it for $175. It has been a slow progression of improvements. Used a Tasco for YEARS, then bumped up to a Simmons, and then decided to try a nicer scope with some Christmas money.

$175 for a scope? Are you sure this is the real Ursus, or some imposter?
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I had about $200 in gift cards. Plus I have spent years reading about the wonders of more expensive scopes. I will admit the clarity is noticeably better. I actually put a Vortex on my .22-250 last year when it's who knows what package scope finally bit the dust. It is nice, but I actually like the Oculus better than the Vortex.

I recently purchased a fixed 16x scope from SWFA based on recommendations here.
It was inexpensive (~$300), but I have been pleased with the quality.

Answers in bold. Appreciate the responses this far.

On price, was thinking that $300 and under mark unless I can get an exponentially better scope for a 30% increase.

MRAD or MOA?
No idea. Shotgun gun guy. Will look up. Rec?

What range will you be shooting?
Typically within 100 yrs but as far as 300 if I move to a utility pipeline.

Do you want exposed turrets?
No preference.

Do you want a reticle with just crosshairs or with markings for windage and elevation?
Crosshairs only fine.

How bright will it be when you are hunting?
Both early morning & evening hunts. Typically shades with East Texas tree lines.

Probably missed something but others will fill in.

This is what I would look at that's just barely over your budget, but will fit your usage the best. VX3 is a good scope.

My brother runs vortex on his rifles because of this and that dude was a sniper with the US Army. He likes the options you can get with vortex at the price.

I run nikons on my rifles and have really liked them.

I put this on my kid's .243 and it's pretty dang clear. I shot a hog right at dusk 6 months ago with it in Canton and this glass was still picking up light when my buddy's was not. He had a scope that came with his savage rifle. This thing was under $200 so it could fit your needs.

I have a Prostaff Monarch on my 270 and it's great but it's also around $400

Natchez has some nikon monarchs on sale for $300.
