The point schmellba99 made doesn't have to do with leases specifically or Doss at all.
He is pointing out the fact that everyone is all about private property rights until the next door neighbor puts up a deer stand along the shared fence and the first reaction is to log on to TexAgs to complain.

I will give both HOA's that I've lived in a lot of credit. They are run by good folks, reasonable on enforcement, and keep our common areas (including the neighborhood pools) looking fantastic with a very low fee. I know there are bad ones that overreach, but I'd much rather have the ones we've had over nothing at all.

I was pretty anti HOA until a neighbor asked me to join the board. It was an easy election process because no one else wanted to serve.

It was an eye opening experience and I came to really appreciate what the board did.

When you buy what was farmland with a house on it for $250k in 2018, and that same house is available for $260 in 2019, an HOA is used to protect the value of the $250k house, because now it's used, why wouldn't you buy the newer house for $260k? So builders had to use HOAs to protect the value of the homes they were building in suburbia so that they could continue to throw them up or no one would by a house for $260k that would be worth $230 in 3 years bc the build was throwing up crap as fast as he could next door. So HOAs had to used to slow the depreciationZ

Then builders, city's and lawyers saw ways to make money on the deals and they became prolific.

Builders got tax breaks from the cities for stuff they were going to build anyways like roads, parks and lakes but passed the costs directly to the residents.

Cities then bypassed the maintenance on those same items by keeping the deeds in HOAs names and they get to collect property taxes on them.

Lastly the lawyers get to write the covenants, run the management company, and profit from the enforcement letters, lawsuits, and the foreclosures.

And the HOA members pay $150-300 month that's not tax deductible for right to use their parks pools and roads.

Y'all are a bunch of suckers. Buy in a neighborhood with appropriate deed restrictions but no HOA and you get the best of both worlds. You can enforce the standards on your ****ty neighbor's dime without dealing with a bunch of bored old biddies too cheap to sue you at risk for minor bull*****

We have a 1970s restriction against fences taller than 6 feet. Everyone has an 8 foot fence. No HOA letters delivered because no HOA.

Also, drive the alleys before you buy in a place. That'll tell you all you need to know.

I used to have an HOA, but now I don't. Prefer the latter experience. I mow properly (formally gas powered, now reel) and neighbors keep up their properties just fine.

That's great until there's a more serious violation of the deed restrictions by someone else, and they use this non-enforcement of the fence height as a defense.
Deed restrictions are great as long as they are enforced. If they're not, they lose their teeth quickly.

As far as the banquettes in the driveway, hopefully you have a bulk trash day soon, and that those banquettes happen to move closer to the curb the night before.

Augie M. He passed away and I think his son has too. When we bought our place the lot between us was his shop are and it was knee deep in every outboard motor part imaginable. It didn't bother me so much - because he was there first and that was just a getaway place. Eventually tho he got crossways w the Nav Dist & they revoked his lease, then cleaned it up bc of the nuisance.

As person that has no HOA, grew up with deed restrictions and WASP neighbors that didnt act like do osh nozzles....If that were my house, and I caught my neighbor moving my property out to heavy trash, via my camera system, I would be super super super happy about how exciting his life was about to get.

I also like the NIMBY's that ***** and moan about this guy and the guy in the twitter feed all day long until their precious car breaks down and they need his help. You think the neighbor with pleated khakis and a lawn company is going to be able to help you? No. He won't.

Why can't people just not be *******s? I think that's the problem here.

Why don't you go over there with a 6 pack and move those f-ers out a bit and have a beer with your neighbors? You aren't really better than he is. You're just pretentious.

I had an enormous, six foot tall brush fire going on the east side of my property last night. I sat nearby with a stogie and a beer and watched it burn till dark. People driving by would slow down and stare, and I just hoisted my beer in salute.

Because no HOA, my property, F you.
