I'm headed down to Bolivar in a little over a month with some out of town family. I want to chase some trout and redfish (no boat, wading only.) Would y'all just hit the surf early and watch for working birds and bait? Or are there some slews and backwater worth fishing?

Bolivar pocket in the morning. Turn right at the first beach access once you get off the ferry. Go back towards the jetty. The pocket is the shallow sandy area next to the jetty. Stingray shuffle is important here, well really anywhere in the bay.

Yes, there are a bazillion stingrays in the pass area. Just be aware and don't make sudden moves.

And don't let a sting ray stab you through the heart.

I am proficient in the stingray shuffle and don't plan on wading deep enough for one to sting me in the heart.

Although I do appreciate the advice.

Surf fishing is very good in early to mid June there.
Keep an eye out for sharks - they seem to love the Crystal Beach area more than most other places in Texas - fished there a few years ago. Caught a limit of trout - but had to walk each one back to the cooler on the beach so the sharks didn't steal them off the stringer.

If the water is trout green in the surf get relatively close to Rollover. Right at daylight you can start working the first and second gut. When the water's right, it's pretty easy to limit out on artificial. If the water has some brown, free line croakers with a split shot in the third gut.

High Island area is great too just know if you go too far past High Island there is a nude beach... said nude beach is NOT any place you really want to go to!
Fair winds and a following sea.

Disagree. It's not nearly as crowded.

I'll be down there for a few days later this month (Memorial Day weekend). I will be doing some surf fishing but won't be too mobile as the primary reason for going is for my wife to get her "beach fix". We'll also have some other family members with us part-time (to do the beach thing). So surf fishing will be primarily limited to wherever we set up for the day.

I hope to get 1 or 2 sessions in at Rollover Pass as I've never fished there and want to hit it up before it gets filled in (eventually). I understand you really only want to fish Rollover when the tide is moving. I guess some folks set up on the Gulf side during an outgoing tide and cast into the current letting their bait drift out to where the predator fish are waiting. Not sure what kind of setups are used fishing the channel or wading and chunking out into the current. Understand currents can be pretty dangerous on the Gulf side when the tide is moving. I guess wading on the bay side is a good option.

Checked out that part of the beach back in high school. It was kind of a rite of passage if you grew up in Chambers County to say you'd been there at least once. Basically, there were a few old dudes (no surprise) and a single woman pushing about three hundo (also no surprise). There is good fishing down there.

Same people it sounds like. The "man-sandwich" in the folding lawn chair was enough to cause me to shag ass back Crystal Beach way.
