I'm doing a charity skeet shoot Friday and it's supposed to rain. I have a brand new benelli over/under that I'd like to shoot for first time. If I shoot it in the rain what immediate cleaning/oiling would you do and how soon after shooting? Last thing I want is to get any rust on the thing.

A buddy mentioned wiping it off after the shoot and immediately applying a little oil but I was just planning on wiping down as good as possible and then cleaning it friday afternoon/night when I get home. Thanks for any advice.

Dry it off in the car with a towel. Disassemble when you get home and oil the whole damn thing!

We got drenched in a 3 gun match and it was horrid; so many places for water to go in a gun!

We had gun pieces strewn around the garage for days....

2 rifles, 2 pistols, and 1 shotgun

That's my worry. I'd be watching Youtube videos for a week trying to figure out how to put the damn thing back together.

BEFORE you go, clean it real good and wipe all the metal down with oil. Don't forget the metal on the forearm. Try to limit the amount of water that gets into the barrels when the action is open, rust in the extractors isn't fun. Lastly, as soon as you are done take the gun apart and dry off everything, spray clp and let dry. I place the stock with the action down so the water doesn't get back into trigger. If the trigger is removable take it out and spray it down too. I take two gun sleeves with me, one for during the shoot that gets wet when I slip the gun back in between stations and one for after so my dry gun doesn't ride home in a sleeve that previously had a wet gun in it. Get the gun out of the case as soon as you get home and let it air out, mine will live in the corner for a day or two.

3 years ago at a big shoot it was pouring and the forearm to by 725 got water on the side against the barrels, which is rarely finished on low end O/Us, it swelled up so bad that I had to let it dry out for a day or so before it would go back together. I got it back together about an hour before I had to be to my next event. Fortunately no damage was done.


Also, I know guys that will wax the stock before they go into the rain and are liberal with the WD40 before a wet shoot.

Wipe off all the water with a dry towel, take off handguard to get underside of barrel. Put some oil on a rag and wipe down all surfaces that same day. Run an oily patch down the bore. You can start getting rust in just a few hours in the right conditions.

Shot during a hurricane in Virginia a couple of years ago. Wiped down the outside of my shotgun at the hotel. Next day I went to load it and things were very stiff. Pulled the shells out of the tube and they were covered in rust. Magazine spring had completely rusted up overnight. Had a similar situation with the magazine springs in my pistol rusting overnight at a match in Houston. Steel charging handle in my AR has been rusted shut a couple of times too.

I've been drenched a bunch of times, all my guns have gotten rusty at some point. It's not the end of the world, it mostly wipes off if you get at it within a few days. I try to be more proactive than in the past at taking care of my guns when it rains.

I think the prospect of shooting in the rain is the biggest driver for me to do more than just run a bore snake down the barrels of my O/U.

I know it doesn't help, but this is exactly what I bought by Benelli Super Nova for.

RAIN.

Not ideal for tournament....but I use it for that anyway. I'm not making a living shooting clays and no tournament is worth the mental anguish it causes me when my tools get wet.

After the shoot, marinade every inch of the gun in Corrosion X and let it soak for a while. Wipe off the excess. It will not rust.

For those of you who have never used Corrosion X, this **** cures cancer.

Well *****..I've got cancer too so this could be an awesome thread!

Auto shotgun and AR'sthe bufer tubes actually had standing water in them.

Next time I have the opportunity to shoot in a monsoon, I'll pass.

For those interested in corrosion resistance for long term storage of weapons a guy over at shotgun world did a huge test of lots of different product. His recommendation was the special WD40 that blocks rust, not the plain old blue can.

Also, when you get out of the shoot, hammer that thing with gun scrubber. Will help get water out of bad places then hit it with preventative stuff after cleaning. We go through gun scrubber by the case here.

Go get you a can of Hornady One Shot - it is very good at providing dry film protection against corrosion. The WD40 product that is similar works very well too.

Disassemble gun, apply per instructions on can, let dry. Repeat. You will protect 99.999% of the metal on the gun this way. After the shoot, wipe down surfaces to get any moisture off. When you get home, strip and clean like you normally would, oil any parts that need oiling.

Well...I soaked her today and put 100 plus rounds in. I like it a lot. It's light weight and my shoulder doesn't hurt like hell like it has the previous few years when I've been shooting my beretta semi-auto. The only thing I don't like about it is that every time you close the gun after loading it puts it on safety. I understand that's smart, but it was really annoying in the rain during a competition when you had to load 4-5 sets of 2 at each station.

Thanks to all for the recommendations. We wiped down the guns and took them apart to air out. Blew them out with air compressor and going to clean/oil the heck out of them tomorrow.

A competent gunsmith can disable the auto saftey for you. My clays gun has the safety completely disabled.
