Less time drinking beer and more time maintaining equipment?

May want to ask the neighbor to teach the boy how to replace failing parts, like plastic bearings in the front wheels.

Are you my neighbor? That described my last Sunday afternoon to a T.

Started behind a push mower at around age 8 or so. On a side note, it was funny how after my younger brother went off to Texas A&M Dad soon got a riding mower, very curious.

Started running the weed eater around 8 or so for my grandpa while my older brother mowed. Did that for a couple of years before we began to switch off between the two. Dad usually mowed around the house, but seems about that time my brothers and i became the yard crew too.

Old Sears push mower. Dad didn't even believe in self propelled mowers until we left the house and he had to start mowing again himself. Nope, straight up old fashioned push mower.

When I moved back to Texas, Dad would come over when I was on the road and mow my yard during the week sometimes. Pretty sure he just wanted to ride around like Forrest Gump on the riding mower - he enjoyed the hell out of that. Never had a yard growing up that warranted a riding mower, so it was a novelty to him I think.

The absolute perfect age is the age when he stops asking and does NOT want to do it.

My wife snapped this of our son last night:

Not even 2 yet. You're never too young to start mowing.

We don't use a self propelled mower now. I prefer the maneuverability of the old style push mower. And since my son helped to "pay" for the mower, he didn't see the value in the added cost.

Can he push it? It's time.

My parents had a riding mower and an acre. We were mowing by age 8 or even earlier. The first mower had a manual clutch, too.

The wheels are about to fall off of that thing. Get the boy a new mower at least
I asked my dad regularly for a new mower the last 4 years I lived at home. The second weekend I was in College Station, he called me and said, "you were right, I bought a new lawn mower today."

For me it depended on size. My oldest is a big tall kid. He started at 8. My youngest is on the small side. He started at 10. He couldn't get enough leverage to push the mower.

I started driving this horrible Allis-Chalmers lawn tractor for my dad at about 11. He had to jump start it for me but then I mowed the property like I was Forrest Gump.

I was about 6 when I got my first mowing job. It was on a Ford 8N with a 4 ft shredder.

Son started at about 10..... but he only weighed about 70 lbs. At 14, he rarely uses the weed eater. He made about $2500 mowing as a 12year old and about $4500 last year at 13. He is off to a good start this year.
My daughter was 9 but we had gotten a self propelled by that time. She hates it but made about $750 last year.
My second daughter is 9 this year and she will probably start mowing the back yard mid summer.

They average aver $40 per hour. It's great.
I don't pay them to do my yard but I help them do their business yards (most of the weed eating).

I was using the "push" mover at around 12-13. "push" because it was an early version of a self propelled Sears mower that had the drive system drop down onto the front wheels (read HEAVY here) and the gears engaged the knobbed front wheels. It was push because the HEAVY propel system was broken, and thereby a push mower with the HEAVY self propel system not working and could not be fixed. It was a HEAVY PUSH mower.. On a half acre yard. This from about 11yrs old till 14.

I was the most exited kid of the year when Sears delivered our lawn tractor when I was about 14. Excited to the point of tears almost. At about 15, I learned what the governer level did to the RPMs, and then I could power thru the grass over the septic field without having to mow it twice with two levels, thereby saving lots of time. And with the extra RPMs I could enter the neighborhood "mudding contest" with mowers when the kid across the street's dad took to long to distribute the dirtpile to even their yard. Epic fun for us. Leant to a beating to that kid cause of the massive mud hole in his front yard.

However, shortly thereafter, when mowing our yard, the engine miraculously threw the rod. and I was pushing until one day Dad had to do it, and miraculously we had another engine on that rider.

I did not over rev that new engine for fear of pushing that overweight self/not propelled again.
"Green" is the new RED.

HAHAHA....I started mowing when I was probably 10, but the mower we had was a hand me down from my grandmother. It was a sears like you are talking about. It was dark green with a white briggs motor. The drive wheels where metal and they were spring loaded somehow and they engaged the front wheels...I think...maybe the rear...I can't recall. Either way, the drive wheels, which were metal, were basically smooth from wear. It was the same thing....you mostly just pushed the damn thing around. Even calling it a push 'assist' was a stretch. LOL.

I use to have to put a bag of shot in the seat with my daughter when she used the riding mower, otherwise the engine safety switch would kill the engine every time she hit a bump.

Both my kids were pushing this thing around in the yard while I mow since they could walk

It even has a little gas container that they fill with water and pour in the gas tank on the mower.
