Just recently buried a close family member of mine while I'm simultaneously planning a wedding so songs and what they represent have been at the forefront of my mind. If you could pick one song that represents Texas and what it means to you, what would it be? I've basically told everyone if I die I want this song played at my funeral because it's everythhing I love about Texas.

The rays of light thru my shiner bock bottle....

Since you brought up a funeral, my Grandma passed away two weeks ago. Till the end, she would enjoy a cold shiner bock (or two) while hanging out with us. When it reached the point she couldn't leave the house, she made sure my uncles and dad bought her cans only so the neighbors wouldn't hear the clanking glass when the trash went out. After the funeral, our family get together could have been a shiner bock ad.

REK doesn't have a Billy Bobs album, do you mean "The Live Album?"

I'll throw in Dancehall Dreamer by Pat

The REK song is actually from the Son's of Hermann Hall here in Dallas, I think. That is the live version where he tells the Presbyterians story. Great song!

This one does not mention Texas, but when you go the dances out here in the hinterlands away from city lights you're very likely to hear this one.

Yeah, it was late last night. You are correct. I'm sure I got that confused with somebody else that sang at Billy Bob's.

This is the first one that came to mind:

But this one immediately followed:

Used that second one as the soundtrack to a video retrospective I made about the First Annual Boys' Trip I took with my then 6 and 8 year old sons, road-tripping around Texas to see historic sites from the Alamo to Texas Capitol and everything in between, so let's just say it tends to get a little dusty in the room any time I hear it.

Since I mentioned it, here's the video in question . . .

"Amarillo Higway" by Terry Allen, not the REK version.

"Texas in my rear view mirror" by Mac Davis

Great Texas songs even though most of the population of the state wouldn't be able to identify with them.

Actually, I did it all on my iPhone! Just downloaded iMovie, imported the pics from the camera roll, added the soundtrack, et voila! It was the first time I did it, so it took me a minute to figure it all out, but it was incredibly easy. And now we all have something to look back at in the future and remember the trip. I've been doing them every year since then, and will keep doing them as long as we're taking Boys' Trips.
