The latest bomb was set up in an upper middle class area. Have a friend who lives a couple of blocks away and they said the following in a text this morning.

"The explosive was attached to a sign that was placed there between 7:30 - 8:30. It read "Drive Like Your Kids Live Here" and had a trip wire attached to it. When the guys rode past on bicycles, one of their legs brushed the wire and the device detonated. Nails and other objects were everywhere...it was tragic"
If they can peg down the timeline of when the first person noticed the sign, and the explosion happened by 9pm... they should have a really good window to check surround area cameras from stores, houses, traffic cams, etc.

That's a 2 hour window. I'd like to think they'd be able to do something with that.

I am just thinking about the time it takes to set up a game camera or set up a animal trap. Takes enough time for someone to drive by and think, that is weird, what is going on? Unless he/she has people watching the street.

no crazy person

IMHO a dude making bombs is a crazy person
I know, I'm splitting hairs here...I don't like it because it's a catchall. I just mean that I have a very very narrow definition of crazy. I don't like to throw it around lightly because it tends to be used eventually as an excuse. So narrow that I need someone with a degree or two to properly diagnose it. So much so that I don't think this person is crazy at all until someone proves it.

I think he/she/it is a huge ********ed ******* that has enough intelligence to not only put a bomb together, but to incorporate remote detonation devices targeted to particular people at specific times, even going so far as running tests to fine tune it and escalating to...I don't know what.

They know damn well what they are doing. "Crazy" in social campfire speak, sure, but otherwise..nah.

I havent been following in depth, I try my best not to watch the news it just gets irritating....I would assume with explosions these are killing people? yes or no? Has any of the nation news programs picked this story up? Seems like something they would pursue.

Hear that neighborhoods are starting to organize neighborhood watch patrols. No doubt, many will be armed (gasp). I hope they get this deranged person off the streets before anybody else gets hurt. Too bad you can't head over the local REI to get some ammunition I support the neighbors getting together to help address the issue, good luck Austin.

I think you're giving too much credit to the average person. I'd wager 85% of people wouldn't look twice at someone setting a sign up and the rest wouldn't pay attention once they saw it was a positive sign like watch out for kids.

Yeah smartphones really distracted people from noticing the Unabomber too.

Bigger issue is we live in a comfortable society where most people can't understand why someone would do this or imagine it happening in their backyard. I'm just as guilty. I wouldn't think in a million years someone setting up a sign about keeping the children safe was setting up a bomb.

The Unabomber wasn't placing bombs, he was mailing them.

It's very hard to spot someone mailing a package at a mailbox and pickup anything unusual.

I heard them talking about it looking like the hours on a clock. Started at 1, 3, 5, then 7 clockwise. But this was some news director's personal opinion and not necessarily from a credible lead.
Correct - it sort of looks that way if you follow this pattern:

All the reports from local news are that the reason the 3rd one went off at 11 was because the lady didn't go outside till then. I thought times were related after first two but looks like unlikely since it's all a matter of when they went outside to see the package.

Edit: I'm an idiot, Your talking about location on the map. Yeah. Looks like there is something to this statement.

Not all of his bombs were mailed. And even some of the mailed ones were only mailed because they found with the target's return address and returned to sender.

Either way, lack of attention to something maybe abnormal but not unreasonable has more to do with the comfort and relatively safety of our society than it does smartphones.

I'm proud of our young Trauma Center ( Best in Austin).
But, the whole deal lends credence to the fact that you can't legislate against "crazy!"
My experience is that our LE folks are really trying, and doing an admirable job. But, we all need to be vigilant each day.

I agree with not being able to focus exactly on one thing while driving in a neighborhood. I am constantly scanning for kids, dogs, etc running out in front of me. It gets worse with lots of folks parking on the street.

I would notice if someone else placed something on the sidewalk in front of my house, for sure. I know that no one in my house would have done that. Months ago, I would have gone out to check it before doing anything about it. Now, I would be calling the LEOs first, and then trying to use some binos to check it out from afar.

I hope carbombs aren't next?

Prayers for those impacted, and hope we don't have to add more to the list before they catch this/these scumbag(s).

If he's completing the square around Austin... he'll be heading north from the last location. Which, given his pattern... would likely put the neighborhoods south of the river, within 1 mile from 360 in his sights. He seems to plant these in more or less the center of a pocket of homes, close to a major highway.

I hope APD are stepping up their patrols in that area. He could very well strike anywhere, but if he's following a pattern... that seems the most likely given the four previous data points.

If he's following a clock pattern (or any pattern), then quite frankly he's not doing a very good job of it. I don't think there's much to the 1,3,5,7 thing. I think it's just coincidence that his attacks very roughly almost sorta hit those numbers on a clock.

Heck, if you wanna make a clock then overlay a clock on Google maps and pinpoint exactly where you need to go. Of course, that would make guessing his next location a little easier. Sort of.

I saw on reddit that each of these locations is near a greenbelt. Speculation is that this guy could be parking further away and hiking to the plant locations.

This thought has crossed my mind as even be likely. I'm also wondering if the target demographic shift is a response to media coverage.

I heard this too and check aerial maps and only 2 of the four have a greenbelt type area.

The second attack happened at 4806 Oldforthill Dr. Which when you google says it is a child care (Young at Heart Childcare). The 4th bomb was placed at a school bus stop. This guy appears to be trying to hurt kids maybe?

Walked out the door to two unexpected packages this morning. Turns out my wife is taking deliveries for a baby shower but wasn't expecting those yet.

After much poking and prodding, it was determined to be a non-incendiary diaper pail.

Sucks that this is life now. Hopefully this FedEx situation is the mistake that gets him nabbed.

Only one suitable method in this case. Shooting suspect in the balls while he is the planting device, causing it to detonate in his face.

But then I am can be a bit extreme at times.
