Stumbled across some old pictures of sailfish fishing trip where we caught a Hammerhead Shark. Trip was in the early 2000's just offshore Miami, FL. It took us 45+ minutes to get it to the boat and 3 of us took turns on the fight. We had no idea what it was until we finally got it to the surface near the boat. I tell the story occasionally and get some skeptical reactions - thought the wisdom of the OB could help me ground truth some of the facts as told to us by the boat captain/guide.

1. Shark would have been a tackle record fish if 1 person would have fought it the entire time (we switched off). We were after sailfish so line, and I think leader (?), was mono (dont remember line weight).
2. It was miracle we actually got it to the boat. The line could have easily been cut just by the hide of the shark, nick by the tail etc.
3. It weighted around 400 pounds.
4. Hammerheads were very rare in those waters.

Fire away.

Other pictures of the fish we were after... Funt Trip. 1st day was almost a dead calm which the captain said was BAD for fishing - were were using outriggers and sails for outside rigs and had to add helium balloons to keep them up. 2nd day was normal breeze and that is when we caught the most fish.

A few observations:

- That shark does not look like it weighs 400 lbs. Also- greater hammerheads get WAY bigger than that.

- Why would this have been a record? Are you talking about an IFGA record due to line size?

Quite a catch on popping corks and shrimp. Why are the popping corks tied upside down on the line?

I have no idea about records, etc., but it sure does look like a good time!

Captains tell fish stories. Cool catch, but I think the Captain inflated the stats. They do that to give you good stories to tell and for advertising. My guess is that it weighs closer to 175-200 lbs.

It is really surprising that you got it in the boat! Someone here might know the record the Captain was talking about. Don't hammerheads migrate?

Looks like a great day of fishing!

A 1000lb hammer head was caught last year in Texas City. No way 400 was closed to a record

Am I the only one that read the OP and then scrolled back up to make sure it wasn't Barnes/Barnes sock?

They get much larger than the one y'all caught. Not that uncommon, but a cool fish to catch.

I believe he is talking about a record for that lines strength. Like fly fishing tippet etc

Cool catch but hammerheads aren't remotely uncommon off Miami.

A few things...

Guides often stretch the truth. This seems to be a case where that has occured.

1) I'm not entirely sure about the rules regarding IGFA records so I'll pass on this one.

2) Absolutely a possibility. They wear through leaders and line all the time.

3) I am sure the guide likely told you it weighed around 400. The fish in the picture likely is larger than it appears too. That said it is not a 400 pound hammer. Guides lie or stretch the truth all the time. Gets the clients pumped up. They make them feel like they really caught a monster. They also get you feeling like you really get your money's worth and it sure doesn't hurt at the end of the trip when it comes to tip time.

4) Hammerhead numbers are down but they are still common.

The charter I was on caught a hammerhead shark deep sea fishing out of Port Aransas about 25 years ago. They estimated it was about about 180-200 lbs and it looked a lot like what you reeled in.

It was an outrageously good fishing day. For fun, the deckhand put a Vermilion snapper on (what I recall was) a 200-lb test line and let it sit for a while. The shark was our end of the day surprise that made us 2 hours late back docking.

It's a super cool weird-ass looking fish.

Did 2 years at U Miami with a lot of diving from Delray down to down the keys. Shark population is down but there used to be a 10 foot hammerhead that would regularly cruise Pennecamp park off Largo. Really do not understand shark hunters because is you kill all the sharks the whole ecosystem dies.

Ok. The Barnes comment hurts. I made it very clear I was asking for opinions, not making claims. Really just wanted to share some old pics.

The record would have been a "Tackle" record - which is based on the size/type of line/leader used. Definitely not claiming this would be the biggest Hammerhead ever caught - that would be a Barnes move...

Upside down corks sort of explained in OP. Was curious if anyone else had been with a guide that used same methods.....

I didn't see any mention of the corks in your OP. Please elaborate for a fairly inexperienced saltwater fisherman.

Sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I just read the OP and thought, please not another Barnes troll and then scrolled up, saw your name and thought, nope this dude is legit.

Pretty sure that is a Scalloped Hammerhead. Certainly not a Great Hammerhead.

In any case, those are cool pics. I've gone on a sleigh ride with a hammerhead when aI had my kayak so I know that sized shark would have been an absolute monster fight for yall.

Keep the pics coming!

Sorry for snarky response. We were using kites on the outriggers so the line was hanging from the kite. The floats were used as a gauge to make sure the bait was at the correct depth. Let out line until float is just above the surface. If you can't see float it is under water so you reel in. Hope that helps It was a lot of work keeping bait at right depth

No problemo amigo! Didn't take it as snarky, just figured you assumed we all knew what you meant and I wanted to understand.
