Did a search on the forum and didn't see anything pop up.

Was told this is THE spot to hit for big game fishing in Costa Rica? Is the fishing all that? Does anyone have any experiences they could share? There seem to be lots of accommodations available and the marina is big.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Los Suenos is the hot spot during the winter months.

I have fished out of Los Suenos several times. December-March are the best sailfish months. I would recommend one of the Fly boats. I've fished with Capt David twice on superfly but he and his crew moved to another boat. I'll try and find that boats contact information. I would highly recommend Los Suenos. I've never had less than double digit numbers of sails and our best day was 21 sails and 2 blues.

fished there three times. I think we fished with Costa Rica Dreams. We had a quite a few guys so we needed big boats, which they had.

As said before, Dec - Mar is prime time. Only one day was it slow. Usually the weather is good and the seas are not too rough, although the first year we went and we also slept offshore one night, it was rough as a cob.

The golf course is good, and you can have a fun night in Jaco which is close by. The Hook Up bar at the marina is a nice spot to kill a few hours after you come in.

Stayed at the Marriott once, and condos arranged by Costa Rica dreams and rented a bad ass house on the course one-time.

We were thinking of going sometime this month - renting a villa and boat. Is the entire village run out of one real estate group or are there multiple agencies working the area?

this is a very timely thread!! We are thinking of going in April/May. A few questions for the board:

1) how is the fishing then?
2) how far do you go offshore? Wife likes to fish and done a little offshore but she prefers to be able to see land
3) how are the beaches? One thing wife really wants is a nice beach with good sand and where you can get in the water (unlike Cabo...the other destination we are considering).

Maroon,
how was the Marriott? have bookoos of points to use up so looking at their places in CR
only problem is we're likely going Thursday - Tuesday and looks like to get to any Marriott properties in CR you're going to lose a day traveling there and a day back.

The Marriott was just fine. Rooms were nice, and they had a very nice pool with swim up bar. We never ate at the restaurant as we had dinner in Jaco or casual eats at the Hook Up.

Never set foot on a beach there, so I cant answer that question.

Fishing - seems like you don't go that far out to start fishing, but you might end up 10-20 miles offshore. CR has the reputation as not having rough seas and usually in my experience that is true. In fact one day it was like glass, which was actual brutal because that means no wind, which means super hot.

April-May is actually better or Marlin, but the sails might be less. Still I think it would probably be pretty good along with Mahi Mahi and Yellow fin.

I second Quepos. Me and a buddy make annual trips down there in March (except for last year and this year as I got married and now he is). We average probably 10-15 sailfish a day and do one day of nearshore to catch some Snook and Roosterfish. We do it on the cheap so we stay at a small hotel in Quepos and spend the money on the fishing!

Not what you were asking about but I love Costa Rica fishing haha

If you want to go to America in Costa Rica, go to Los Suenos.
If you want to feel like you left the states, go to Quepos.

I prefer Quepos. Fishing is fantastic either way.

Fished quepos for rooster tail and snook. Fun stuff. If the wife wants a beach, that area is not as good. We went past jaco and found good beaches without a soul on them. It may have been past hermosa but it was a long time ago. I do not recommend Jaco unless you want to remember nuevo laredo from 1970's.

I've been to Quepos - we did well fishing, rented a house there etc.

This will be my 40th bday trip, so looking for the nicest - best fishing I can find.

Any other recommendations?

If just wanting to vacation: Hotel Riu Palace. All inclusive, great food, great beach, great rooms and service. NW side of Costa Rica. West of Liberia. Similar resort next door named Hotel Riu Guanacaste is nice also. Offer some great excursions at reasonable prices but can book excursions on the beach also. Zip lining, white water rafting (there are some good rapids), etc
