RIP Mr. Allsup. Wished I could have met you. By all accounts he seemed like a humble and giving guy.

Don't have em here in S TX/SA area, but we always stop when we're on the way to Colorado.

Lonnie Allsup figured out the same thing that ole Sam Walton figured out; if you locate in the small towns and put out a good consistent product, the local folks will support you, they'll be very loyal, and you can make a healthy profit and grow your business.

Sam Walton had very few if any Walmarts in big cities up til the day he died. He was leery of doing business there, in spite of what his kids and advisors wanted. After he died is when the big growth into the cities happened.
Greater love hath no man than this....

South Texas guy here and I have negative memories of Allsups. I can recall driving from College Station to Liberal, Kansas with a buddy in the early 1980s. The route was Fort Worth to Childress and then north up the east side of the Panhandle. Unbeknownst to a couple of South Texas Ags, there is no beer west of about Wichita Falls as I recall. We got a 12-pack in Forth Worth and stopped at an Allsups in about Electra (or maybe it was Vernon) only to find out no beer. From Electra to the Oklahoma border, we stopped at an Allsups in every town to find out no beer. It seemed it was the longest drive of my young life.

In the 70's you could get 2 for $1. You pick up your cleanest dirty shirt the next morning, still smell the grease and know that bad boy had been on a late night allsups run.

Never visited a clean one in Brownwood.

Well, that's not exactly the fault of Allsups.
