I've read through some of the whiskey threads...just saw one posted on Rye and so I figured I'd ask for some advice as well.

I've always liked Crown, either on the rocks or with a splash of ginger ale. Is there a whiskey similar/superior to Crown with the same style/flavor? I read on another forum that this is similar to asking for a fancy Michelob Light, but I thought I'd ask here anyways.

I've tried several buddies' favorite whiskeys, but I've always liked Crown more. Trying to find something new...any suggestions?

Well, maybe try a Canadian rye? Pendleton 1910 is VERY smooth...

Edit: some below are saying most ryes are dryer and spicier, probably true, but a Canadian rye like Pendleton 1910 is very smooth and a little sweet.

Also may want to try TX Whiskey... very smooth and sweet also!

Crown is quite a sweet whiskey. Ryes are going to be even less sweet than bourbons in general.

I use to be a crown guy until I had some Basil Hayden (bourbon). Cant remember the last time I bought crown...

Hmmm...

Have you had much scotch? A Famous Grouse would have a different flavor, but similarly smooth, light, sweet, and drinkable imo.

Forty Creek is very similar to Crown

Canadian "rye" whiskey is a very different animal than "rye" whiskey here in the states. A true rue whiskey is much spicier and has more bite.
I love ryes and drink them almost exclusively....that stated, I can't answer your question.

R&R Reserve.

It ain't pretty, but is a very serviceable replacement for Crown.

One of my top choices since the NFR.

If you want something high end try Koval. I just checked and the price is down some. You will not be disappointed.

The answer is TX - blend of 2 kentucky and 1 from indiana. easy to drink

If you like crown - you will love it.

If Crown is what you really like, just stick with that and not worry about what others think. Nothing wrong with crown.

Bought my first bottle the other day.. like it!

Is it pronounced B-ay-sil or does the 'a' sound similar to pronouncing the 'a' in Aggies?

My drink of choice by far is Basil Hayden. Pendleton 1910 is a good rye with a cool glass, I even made 4 whiskey glasses out of the bottom half of the 1910 bottles.

Has anyone tried the basil Hayden rye? I saw it for the first time at our local store.

Some of the Irish whiskies, like Jameson, are on the lighter and sweeter side. IF you want to branch into Scotch, try Dalwhinnie.

Same here. At $20 a handle, it's the best all around Canadian I can recommend.

Pendleton has too much of a chemical aftertaste for us.

Not really worried about what others think, just wondering if there's anything I'm missing that I may like more.

I appreciate all the responses. I'll try one or two this weekend, plenty to celebrate after today's news.

I used to drink that in high school and thought it tasted like Crown. A few years later, I bought it in college because money was tight and "it tastes like Crown". I guess my tastes were a little more refined because it tasted awful.

I think I drank enough Rich & Rare Reserve in college to last me a lifetime.
