Boss showed me a pic of a bear messing with a feeder in Terrell county. Looks like a black bear, but I have no idea on bear species.

1) Is this a common location for them?
2) Is it legal to shoot?

Pretty much just two main species of bear in the lower 48. Black Bear and Grizzly Bear. The name black bear doesn't apply to the color. You can have black bears that are black, brown, and cinnamon colored. Grizzly bears are larger and generally only found in the Northern Rockies and a thin sliver or Washington.

As for the laws, I will leave it to someone else.

Likely a Mexican Black Bear. I'd say fairly uncommon in general although I have seen them a few times SW in the Big Bend region. They are protected from hunting I believe.

I don't know that anyone would. I was just shown the picture and asked if you even legally could shoot it along with if it's common to see them down there.

I remember in Alpine as a kid there was a bear that would come out of the mountains near Kokernot park and rummage through the garbage cans. I think they tranquilized it and shipped it down to Big Bend, but my recollection of the events not 100%.

It's days are numbered most likely. Someone will inevitably shoot it and claim "self-defense" or that it was trying to kill their dog. Just like the bear that was shot outside of Kerrville a few years ago.

These are from Val Verde County. We drove up to check a feeder and saw a bear running up the hill behind the feeder. I got a pic through a spotting scope and then when we checked the game camera, we had a bunch of pics of him.

I love that part of the state. Basically anything close to HWY 90 from Uvalde on. Wish I still lived out there.

It's pretty close and the range of the black bear (just like every animal) is a dynamic thing. Black bears have been expanding their range recently.

We've had a few confirmed in Kansas in recent years as well, but I'm assuming those maps are "normal range" and not, "some dumbass wandering bear that happened to make it to XXXX."

Blue Duck. Good pictures. Had a bear stretch out in a water trough on hot afternoons on a ranch we hunted down stream from Bakers Crossing on the Devils ...your place out Hwy 90 or 277?

Based on this pic, it seems that this bear may have a moonlighting career as a pole dancer in a club in Del Rio.

Ironically, Texas had its own subspecies of grizzlies, but there is a grand total of 1 special and the only know grizzly to even be killed in Texas. Reported to have been very large. On other skull was found in the Red River area, but it was really old.
