I'm aware. Just trying to avoid looking like I went on Naked and Afraid
then don't appear afraid and you'll be good to go.

Wise Company makes some dehydrated meals that are about 750-800 kcal per bag(supposed to be 4 servings) Cheaper than Mountain house, but not as good. But does have a few more calories per bag.

Since weight isn't of utmost importance, forget the Mountain House meals, half the food on the grocery store shelves is the same weight, tastes better and costs about a quarter as much, you just have to cook it in a pot.

Mac and cheese (the good kind with the squeeze cheese, not powder)

Tons of M&Ms, raisins and mixed nuts

Block of dark chocolate, jar of peanut butter

Gatorade mix, fun size snickers

I like hot tang (hehe) with breakfast on a cold morning in the mountains, and hot tea with/after dinner

For coffee if you don't want to dork around with a french press or espresso maker get Starbucks Via packets or if you want to save money the Trader Joe's instant coffee is almost as good.

Go to a mexican grocery and get a box of Nida powdered whole milk, it's high fat and will boost the calories in your granola, oatmeal and coffee.

You can get tuna in these big bags that are equivalent to like 3 cans. A couple of these and some mayo packets you stuff in your pockets wherever you buy lunch this week and you've got tuna salad. Also delicious in your Mac & Cheese. Tuna Helper is pretty good too

Block or two of cheddar, and a summer sausage or two. Zatarains mixes with summer sausage chunks are awesome. You can cut down the cooking time by mixing the rice and water in the morning so it soaks all day.

A small bottle of olive oil, a small jar of montreal steak seasoning, and a flask of your favorite brown likker, for when you tag out!

The Starbucks Via packets are surprisingly good. I took my AeroPress on my last hunt and made coffee each morning for the first 3-4 days with it. After that I got tired of messing with it and the Via packets filled in nicely. Next time I plan on just taking the Via packets.

Add a pack of these to go with the backstrap you'll be good to go. Mandatory side dish for any camping trip.

I never see yall worry about packing in water. Is it just assume you only set up base camps near streams?

To date on my hunts we have been able to get vehicles (at least 4-wheelers) to camp. Not easily, or quickly maybe, but possible. So knowing that we bring a LOT of water. I also freeze a lot of water in 1 gallon jugs and use them to heavily supplement the ice supply in our coolers. That results in a big solid block of ice (that melts VERY slowly compared to bagged ice) that slowly turns into drinking water.

In Colorado water is often available on the mountain as well as long as you don't mind some method of purification. That may not always be the case in Utah and some other more arid mountain ranges.

For day/overnight trips I also carry a filtration straw.

If you want to change up your water flavor.. I'd suggest these pedialyte packages. Two birds, one stone

Probars have more calories and are smaller than Clif bars, plus they taste better to me. MRE, trail mix, or a bar is the easiest

I'd rather eat bear turds than a cliff bar... and I'll do it, if necessary.

Damn we have some picky eaters.

I don't like plain water, so Mio with electrolytes was super easy.

Main reason we went with the MREs and Mountain House stuff was we didn't want to screw around with cooking, and it was fast.

The tenderloins, with Tony's and then Harley's was awesome.

It's funny. I talked with a lot of people about their goals last year before elk season. Most were to kill a bigger bull or call one in or kill one with a bow.

My only goal last year was to eat fresh tenderloin on the mountain. I didn't care if it was a bull or cow or how many inches. Just kill my first elk. To me that was good enough for a DIY hunt on public land as my first ever elk hunt. I took a small collapsable grate, seasoning, and tongs to cook it over the camp fire just in case I shot one.

Grilled it up the first night of the the season. I was so sick, I couldn't eat anything. My hunting partner still says it's one of the best things he's ever eaten with one of the best views he's ever seen. I have no idea what it tasted like, but it's still the best tenderloin I've ever had.

Yeah, Richard and Frank said you were sick as a dog. I never got hit very hard, but both my cousins each lost a day somewhere along the way.

But the tenderloin was freaking awesome. Even with 3 of us, 1 tenderloin was enough for one night. So we enjoyed it twice.

I'm almost done with my elk meat. Think I'll get the itch again in a couple years.

What did y'all get sick with? Altitude sickness?
ursusguy

Yeah, altitude related....Our camp was at 11,200 and we dabbled around 12 ,000 quite a bit.
My cousin coming from California (teacher-38), had to go until 3 PM at his school before he could get on the road. We were told to be ready to go at 9 AM (though due to the Alabama idiots, this would not be an issue anyway). So he drove straight through from LA, and rolled in 8:30 and had his stuff ready to go by 8:45. Then it was hurry up and wait. At 11:30 we packed up, and headed to our camp. So he went from LA to 11,000+ in less than 24 hours. He did fine that day, had the standard breathing fun opening day, but he is a former Marine and we saw quite a few assorted elk opening morning, so he powered through well enough. 2nd morning he woke up feeling like total "dog sh--". He stayed back at camp, took a couple Advil and jugged water like a mad man. By mid afternoon he was able to hunt some around camp some.

I left DFW, and drove to Denver to say with a 3rd cousin the first night (for me), and then picked up Pennsylvania cousin at the Denver airport and then headed up to Trapper Lake Lodge (9,600 ft). And we took our good sweet time sightseeing from Denver to Trapper Lake/Meeker area (aka buying our supplies). He and I were making a point to drink water like crazy, and had some minor acclamation. We met AgLa06 and his buddy at the Lodge.

My Penn cousin is a former college baseball player, that was 32.....ie fairly big dude. He had the worst cardio, but was a out as strong as me and Cali cousin combined. The evening I shot my elk (the 25th), it physically beat the hell out of us. Starting at basically dark, we took it all the way to boning it out. And hauled 4 out of 6 full game bags back to camp, plus the head. That was honestly one of the most physically challenging things I have ever done.

They next morning, we were hurting, but headed back to get the other 2 bags. Out of the blue, Penn cousin got a weird second wind, and damn near ran off with the larger of the 2 bags and I'm not sure if he stopped before getting back to camp. Me and marine were joking he'd feel that later. "Man, I don't know where that came from, but I feel great". Well, starting around dinner time he started getting some leg cramping. Next morning he had all sorts of cramping, and headaches. Water drinking and he was knocked out for the day. By dinner he was back to normal, but effectively missed a day.

Biggest difference was I was the oldest, and had done my darnest to make sure I wasn't playing with heart attack in the mountains. I had worked my a-- off on cardio. I've also never been inclined to have altitude issues beside the initial fun of breathing. I would get tired for sure, but even to my surprise I recovered pretty fast......and all that work has pretty well gone out the door, amazing what you can do with a major end goal.

Altitude sickness, but I came down with an upper respiratory infection on the drive up. I average 4+ liters of water a day the month before we went and the same while I was on the hunt, but it didn't matter. Combining the two was pretty dang bad. I wasn't feeling so hot by the time we got up to the ridge where I killed my bull. By the time we had him boned out and bagged, I passed out for the first time. The only thing that kept me going was I knew we had to get off the mountain as we were at 11,000'+ in an old burn area with no cover and the nastiest blow down I've ever seen.

The Salmon Chowder is their staple. Gritty Bowmen mentioned most the other dinners are a tad spicy and could be risky taking into the backcountry.

Their Orange Vanilla Packaroons and Blueberry Cinnamon Breakfasts both seem to be the most popular of those items.

My order this morning was handed to USPS 2 hours later! Doesnt get any better than that.

Recommend listening to any podcasts Heather has been on lately too.
