If I understand correctly (I had to look it up since I didn't know where the two dams were) they were built to control flooding in downtown Houston. Since they were built so long ago, there has been a lot more concrete and even more people and homes than anyone could have imagined! You all probably knew all that already, but it certainly amazed me that every time I would drive down to the medical center how much new development was being built further and further north and also west. Almost overnight it seemed!
All along the horrific and as far as I can tell never to be finished construction of 290 etc more and more and more concrete with nowhere for the water to go.
A weather apocalypse like this is so thankfully rare that it would be easy to want to find an outlet for the frustration of dealing with all this terrible flooding and rain, but perhaps taking a deep breath and giving thanks for being able to breathe at all is the best medicine right now. Hopefully going forward solutions and some very painful discussions among citizens and officials will help reduce some of the issues with the bayous and flooding, not just during the super high impact events, but some of the lesser ones as well.
God bless and stay safe y'all.

Edit--my reply was to mazzag, but somehow I didn't hit the reply button, sorry...

The whole confusion about the releases is from the Channel 2 anchors not understanding.

What Jeff Lindner was trying to say is that there are going to be slow releases from both dams in to already flooded Buffalo Bayou. What they are doing the intermittent releases for is to protect the integrity of the dam. What Jeff Lindner was trying to get across is that the back up on the back side of the dam going into Cinco Ranch for Barker and like Clay road / Barker Cypress for Ad***** is that those are going to back up into houses and they are going to be in the houses for 1-3 months before they can drain the reservoirs. It is the nightmare. I never thought we would see enough rain to fill them up in one storm. I always was worried about two consecutive storms where they couldn't drain them.

And Jeff said that it will be in their homes tomorrow.

I've had some sketchy flights before, but that's going to be one hell of a ride out of Houston.
How is the store? Right by the reservoir. Going to effect y'all???

Eh.... I don't know off hand. EyeGuy and I moved everything off site on Friday in preparation for possible worst case scenario.... which appears to actually be happening.... I don't think we will have an answer on that until tomorrow morning honestly.

I'm hearing they are expecting water to crest the levee behind my BIL's house in the Great Woods neighborhood in Sugar Land. They are moving everything to the 2nd floor

are there any levees in that region that could be breached or destroyed?

For those interested and those who need them, here are the maps they showed in the press conference. From what I understood during the conference the colored areas are the areas at risk. If you're in those areas, they said you can pack tonight and leave for higher ground at daylight.

Well, it's been one hell of a crazy soaked hard working ass rodeo today. Got 4 cars 3 trailers, 4 horses, Most of the things we love most of have to have out of the ranch. Tired. Sore. Soaked. Tractor Le and gators at the highest point. 30 hours of non stop moving everything we own.

Neighbor had a seizure, had to haul him out. Access bridge in under rushing rainwater.

Still haven't heard from my father in rickport but I assume he is alive

Tomorrow going to try to get the last of the cattle out. Don't want them to die.

Staying at a friends ranch thank god.

Now about to pass out and am watching the news. Holy cow rockport area, Houston, hell half of Texas is in the same terrible shape I am. Or worse. What an absolute tragedy.

God bless all the helpers and all those in need.

The SBA covers loans for primary residences due to flood loss that don't have flood insurance in disaster zones. It's typically a low rate loan. My MIL had to use it after her house on the Guadalupe flooded in 1998 a month after she bought it. She hadn't gone in to sign the paperwork for flood insurance before the floods came.

It's typically a 1-2% loan.

I am in Austin and out of this mess, but I am curious. What if you have a note on the house that just flooded? Are you stuck paying the original note and the new govt back loaned to rebuild?

Amen brother, thank you so much. Tomorrow I will try to get the computer up and post some tips on dealing with Fema and flood Ins carriers. There are a few hiccups there but we learned a lot last year and unfortunately there will be a lot of texagers in need of that. I will start a new thread.

Might be tuesday. Don't want to overpromise.

A ton of places over 20 inches of rain now.

Really liked this article. An outsiders perspective. Goes back to what I mentioned earlier on the thread that whether it's true or just state pride, I like to think Texans handle this better than others.

They are saying people in the Invernes Forest need to evacuate tonight before going to bed. They will be starting the release in the morning. All this is from the press conference a little bit ago on the KHOU/WFAA broadcast. Stay safe and check on anyone living in that neighborhood.

Anyone familiar with Garwood?
A friend recently moved there, so unfamiliar with the flood history.
They are pretty close to the Colorado in town.
They are on the high side, but is that high enough?

The river will eventually get out. If they are on the high side, it probably won't be bad. Garwood has a weird mixture of black land soil and clay-bottomed soil. The clay makes for slow/no drain in the area. FM 950 between garwood and eagle lake is already closed. That's where the river backs up first.

If anyone needs to house their horses or cows, we have an empty pen & pasture. We are in Fort Worth, which I know is far, but the offer is there.
