Honestly from the early reports, the damage in Port A isn't even close to what everyone was saying it would be. The sensationalist and hyperbole is really frustrating. Yes there are some bad scenes and obviously that was to be expected, but overall, things held up much better than any predictions here or on TV.

This kind of tweet is the type that frustrates me. Saying "but there are some buildings still standing" tried to make it sound like most buildings aren't. Most buildings are still standing. No need to exaggerate what is already a bad situation.

Here is a video from Cuero. Fairly repetitive stuff. Not much worth watching after 4-5 minutes. Think this is the Executive Inn Express...

Standing doesn't always mean safe to move back into. As an insurance agent, I'm sure you're aware of this.

The Back Porch is still standing, and I don't know how that place survived.

Seeing lots of pictures coming in on the "Saftey Check" page on Facebook. Also people asking lots of dumb questions like "can we go home now?" Uhhhh no, you may not get on the roads right now and drive to the coast.

Of course. Doesn't change my point at all. It's not helpful to anyone for people on the news or on message boards to overstate the damage. That's all I'm saying. The accurate story is enough to speak for itself.

At 1:00 pm, Tropical Storm Harvey with winds of 70 mph, was moving NNW at 2 mph. At 10:00 AM, movement was N at 2 mph.

I dunno. My inlaws live on the coast and damage like we are seeing out of Rockport would be devastating to them. This is their home, community, their friends.

Moving at 2mph?

That's not typical of hurricanes is it once they make landfall?

I cant stand the drama either, but the truth is nobody knew how bad it would be. Better to be over cautious and seem dramatic than downplay and endanger people.

Agree. I immediately question and discount any report that involves "____________ destroyed", at least when it is something of any significance.

I'm not denying that there is real devastation, and lots of it. There is. I'm just saying that the breathless reports of schools not existing anymore and neighborhoods being gone are not accurate and should be avoided. Just about everything is damages, as you'd expect. Many are total losses. But relatively few are leveled or washed away. It's not a blank stretch of beach now the way many people were predicting.

Fair enough. But over cautious vs over reporting damage are entirely different. At best, the latter only serves to irresponsibly elevate people's anxiety about their loss in a situation where the stress level is already very high. At worst, it results in people responding incorrectly to bad information. It's not helping anyone.

By the way, on West End of Galveston and nothing really bad. Had a dew downed poles, a downed street light towards the west - and a few parking lot lights tipped over by Gumbo Diner on sea wall.

Power out here in Pointe West and no flooding

Let's wait until the water recedes then we'll know more about the beaches. We still haven't seen anything between port a and north padre on 361. And some neighborhoods were a complete loss, like the rv and Mobil home parks. We can debate the safety of these dwellings another day, but they are homes to many and they are neighborhoods.

Overzealous predicting and then overzealous reporting of more damage than is real are absolutely a factor in why people then don't take warnings seriously for the next storm. They see that the damage, however bad it may be , wasn't as bad as predicted and wasn't as bad as initially reported and they tell themselves that it's never as bad as predicted. And then the next time, when maybe they really should leave, they won't. That's the biggest reason people should avoid hyperbole. Give accurate predictions and accurate assessment and let the facts speak for themselves.

Anyway,I'll shut up about that. Like y'all, the Port A/Port Lavaca area is special to me and I have tons of memories down there. Hoping that they can all rebuild and rebound quickly.

Unless something drastically changes I think Houston will be mostly spared of the flooding they were predicting. We're getting enough time between bands for stuff to drain a bit
I don't think we really know yet. If I understand it right the fear for Houston is the swelling of the bayous that COULD happen over the next several days as this thing hangs out over land and then moves north or east.

I certainly hope Houston does not flood. I was living in an apartment off Westheimer during Allison and it was freaking nuts. There are probably a million more people there today than there were back then.
