usually play dead? I was weed eating around the camp house to keep it clean and keep copperheads away. In doing so I came across 2 of them. Wacked the heck out of them with the weed eater and they both flipped over with wounds and did not move for several seconds, even after i nudged them. Finished working the yard and came back to pick them up to find that they had slithered away a few feet. Anyway, I found it odd but it gave me a good reason to use my new 20 gauge.

They we're likely hognoses based on the behavior you described

You sure a cat or something else didn't get after them a little?

Most animals play dead when you sever their head with a weed eater.

The 20 gauge severed their head. Like I posted above, the weed eater cut them up and they acted dead. 5 minutes later they were still alive and on the move.

They don't play dead. You obviously injured them with the weed eater.

That looks like some good catfish bait... if you cut them into 1" pieces they are hard to beat on a trot line.

I have had one just lay there coiled up while we (there were about 8 of us) walked all around him working. After about 40 minutes of walking in the area, someone spotted him and we promptly decapitated him.

Ok. Obviously it's not the best picture but I only see one wound on the left most snake in the picture and none on the one of the right that appear to be pre-shotgun.

Just wanted to point that out. One on the right's tail is buggered up but that seems to me to be from the shotgun based on wound and blood color.

Agneck, those copperheads were on our place near Hallettsville. I have never seen a copperhead in Fredericksburg.....plenty of rat snakes and a few rattlers though.
