Found the dogs rooting around in a trash bag they got into and then one threw up a lot of chicken as soon as she got inside. Dug the rest of the carcass out and found all but one wing and one leg bone. Not 100% sure either of them would eat the leg bone but not positive they wouldn't.

What warning signs do we need to watch for for blockage/perforations? Is this a "go now" emergency vet visit or wait and see? Throw up had a few small bones in it but nothing big. Right now they are being their usual lazy selves...

My dogs would love your trash. But at 50 & 55 lbs each, one carcass wold be a snack...

Will add they don't get leg or thigh bones from us.

Never understood why dogs shouldn't eat chicken leftovers.....our dogs have eaten them for years!

Bones are not good for dogs. Lots of chicken has onion or garlic in the seasoning which is toxic to dogs.

I was always told that bird bones are hollow and can easily break causing shards that can damage the gut. Is that the reason?

They splinter easily and can perforate, especially the eso****us. If they make it to the stomach they are usually digested without issues. To the OP, just watch them, if they have any abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, or vomiting then need to be seen.

Quite the broad statement, to imply "all" bones are not good, and that "any" amount of onion or garlic is toxic.

And what might harm Fifi the toy poodle may not relate at all to 90 lb outside Lab, who eats everything it finds, and has the gut to survive a lot...

Thanks. The main suspect seems to be her usual self and both dogs ate well today. We'll see how things end up on the other end...

I believe this is only cooked poultry bones. The chicken itself is usually fine. When the bones are cooked, they harden and can splinter as others have said. IIRC correctly it is because they're hole as not forced like mammalian bones. The pieces can perforate tissue and cause serious problems. Beef bones are not as much of an issue because they're not as thin as do not break like poultry bones.

The bones are small, and cooking them causes chemical changes that causes them to become hard and brittle and shard instead of remaining softer and flexible and breaking with dull edges.
