I use the looflighter. I just sit it down on the patio beside the KJ and my kids know not to be near the pit. I'm also always outside with them when the pit is lit, so I'm able to keep an eye on them.

I use an electric starter. I put it on the grate of my fire pit to cool.

I've used the cubes and it's a sure bet I'll go out to light th egg and will be out. I've used the paper towel and oil method as well (in fact use a partial roll and oil to light firepit)

MAAP Torch. Ready to grill in 15 min.
This or a propane torch. Something like this assures you never make the excuse of how much time it takes to get the grill going. It is worth it.

When I got my BGE, I got a MAAP torch immediately because of what I read on TexAgs, and I am so glad I did.

I just use one of those plug in metal things.
Same here.

If it is complicated, I can only assume you are the guy on the infomercial that cannot open a cardboard carton of milk without spilling it all over yourself and need one of those spouts they are selling on the same commercial.

I bet my fire is going strong in about 10-12 minutes. Plenty of time for me to get everything prepared inside and come out to a hot pit ready to cook on.

I use a heat gun from Northern Tool or a paper towel soaked in some peanut oil.

I had a looftlighter for a few years, but it finally crapped out last summer, and I don't plan on replacing it. I did like tearing off a bit of the bag for a focus point, which would flame up and get it lit pretty fast.

My MAPP torch isn't quite as fast, I don't think, and I get singed by popping lump every time I use it, but it's too easy to go back to the other.

To those of yall using a Lootflighter / Mapp torch... how quickly does your grill come up to temp?

I'm using cubes (2 at a time)... and have a full bed of hot coals going in under 15 min.

Same. I guess I don't really see the need for anything extra? 15 mins gives me time to get everything ready for the grill.
Would be fun to play with the MAPP torch though.

I get in started in less 2 minutes and then come back and it is ready to go in about 15.

I like to do direct coal cooking at times and the looftlighter helps "dust off" the coals.

I usually leave the looflighter directly on the coals for like 45 seconds and then move it to a few inches away for another 15-30 and that is really all it needs. I come back in about 15 minutes and the coals are going pretty good. If I'm smoking, then I come back in about 5 minutes and get this set up and slowly bring the pit up to 225ish.

Those of you using a large propane torch like this: it's safe for a kamado? It won't heat the ceramic too quickly?

I've been doing it for 5-6 years now with no issues.

That's a weed burner and not what I use personally though I have heard of folks using them with no issues.

I use a Bernzomatic TS8000 torch head connected with a hose to a 14 oz MAP/Pro bottle. When that is done, I will use propane (works just as well and quite a bit cheaper).

So I could hook that ts8000 to a green Coleman propane tank and be fine?
