How long do you want to ignore this user?
I recently bought a lot a realized some brushy areas that need to be cleaned out are FULL of poison ivy. I sprayed some roundup on it last weekend but as I was walking realized how extensive it is and sure I missed some and ran out before getting to all the areas. I heard about s roundup that is modified specifically for poison ivy... is this true? If so where do you get it?

Any other ideas to make sure it all dies before getting back in there to clean out brush? It looks like there was a lot of woody vines and roots it was growing from and want to be sure it all dies!!

And BTW, I can't use fire or nuke it from orbit just to be sure...

Yes I read your last sentence. This is still the best method.

Home Depot and Lowes have the spray for poison ivy. It's next to the Roundup.

Round Up: poison ivy killer is a broad leaf killer. It will also take down trees, shrubs etc. Poison ivy is a woody species, not a weed. So be careful what you spray broad leaf killer on FYI. I have a ton of little plants in my backyard that IL spot treating but I just can't seem to nuke it all.

Something very similar happened to me in high school (minus the hospital part). I was volunteering at a cemetery clean-up and burning the brush and deadfall. Come to find out most of the dead trees had huge poison ivy vines on them, but the actual foliage was high enough up that it wasn't immediately noticeable. I ended up with the rash on probably 90% of my body and missed a week of school. Yes, my twig and berries were affected and it sucked!

Grazon + remedy + non ionic surfactant

Will kill the **** out of a fence line. I have the exact recipe that I can post if interested.

FYI, you can get it from the root system as well. I was digging around on a water valve trying to get a hole cleaned out and get he valve open. My whole forearm has turned to this from rubbing around the root system. I knew the vines were there on the tree and took special care to avoid it, to no avail...

Look for the active ingredient "triclopyr" and you'll find a herbicide that accomplishes what you want.

Roundup lost there patent. Get 41% glyphosate at Tractor Supply in 2.5 gallon concentrate. It's around 50 bucks and will do several seasons @ 2oz. per gallon mixture. I use a 15gal.tank sprayer pulled behind my lawnmower in a cart. When I moved in on my 5 acres I couldnt even see the neighbors house for all the poison ivy mixed in with hackberry. The ivy had vines in the trees 25 feet. It takes time but if you just keep after it with local applications it will work. I also could run my disc plow in between the trees and disrupted a lot of the root systems around. Spray in the summer as much as possible on green plants visible. Come back in the winter and dig and chop the vines, stems, and roots that you can see. Wait til spring and attack what comes up again. It's easier to kill them when they are tender coming off the roots that are left. After that you should have it just about whupped. It never has hurt the trees and I spray right under every one of them.

ps: wear protective clothing, bath yourself and wash clothes right after working in the stuff. Trust me.

Dish soap as a surfactant?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ya it cuts through natural plant oils and helps the herbicide stick to the leaf.

So I'm assuming use specified amount for each Chem, but how much dish soap per gallon?

Roughly a teaspoon. It works, but for me it's worth it to go and buy actual surfactant. It's cheap, you don't have to deal with all the damn bubbles, and it works better than Dawn.

All in the mixing. Add the Dawn last.

How big of a lot are we talking about? And more importantly how much area of infestation? How old are the vines?

I had a good amount of poison ivy that I was able to mostly wipe out by borrowing (NOT RENTING, damnit!) some Boer goats from a small/part-time local producer. He had a herd of about 30-40 and loaned me four (one old nanny, two younger females, one male kid). The nanny was destroying ivy within 30 seconds of delivery. Of her options for something to eat, she didn't like it, she preferred it!

He was happy as hell to have someone else feed 10% of his herd and I was even happier to have the ivy gone. I did need to do some chemical kills the following year to get a total removal. But, the goats having removed the bulk of the plant matter made the overall cleanup a breeze. This requires some fencing but it is very effective, especially on young plants.

I ended up using a combo of:
Bayer Advanced Brush Killer Plus
+
KnockOUT glyphosate (cheaper version of Roundup)
+
Dawn

Sprayed Tuesday... how long does it take to kill the plant/roots? I would like to start clearing again this weekend, but do not want to cut off the visible plants before it kills the whole plant/roots. How fast does it spread to the entire plant?

May be a dumb question, but I have no idea!

TIA!

You should be seeing the beginnings of effect. Leaves curling, stems twisting, wilting. etc. Give it a solid two weeks before trimming or disturbing it so make sure the root is dead.

Just be aware that you can get poison ivy rash and reactions from a dead vine. The oils are still in the vine, the hairy fibers of the trunk, the roots and the dead leaves. The oils take a long time to dissipate. So keep that in mind when you start clearing the dead plants.

You DO realize that dawn dishsoap IS ACTUAL surfactant, right?

Tordon works. Just spot treat and apply carefully.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I do. I worded my response poorly. ...but while serviceable, using dish soap is inconvenient. It's a foamy pain in the ass and you end up with herbicide residue all over your hands and/or back if you use a backpack sprayer like I usually do. A small bottle of surfactant intended for tank mixing of herbicides, like spreader sticker, is about $3-5, and a wise investment in my opinion.

...also apply the tordon VERY carefully. It's got quite a bit of soil motility and since many people are usually treating ivy on/near mature trees it'd be a shame to kill a 60 foot tree while trying to treat a 2" vine.

Longhorns eat it. Mineral spirits wipe if you think you got into it.

Yes becareful burning it. I had a friend that ended up in hospital because he inhaled all this junk from burning it. He was highly allergic and it got in his throat.

Now maybe something else caused it, but have heard others say this.

As someone who used to spend one week of every childhood summer with my eyes swollen shut and even worse...this is so true, don't take a chance burning it. Spray it with Remedy and diesel which will kill anything, maybe once it's all dried out and dead go in with a Yoyo and a rake to clean it up.

Dicamba isn't a great option. You might get some suppression, but not the kill I assume you're looking for. Again, Triclopyr is your friend.
