probably to early today to catch the spawn? Another 3 or 4 weeks it should be on, right?

Up in the creeks? In open water? If creeks, is it clean, or downed timber?

If the water is open then a simple 2" curly tail jig on a lead head (whatever weight needed to get the jig near the bottom, usually 1/8oz or 1/16oz). If it's got a lot of trash or downed timber then I add a small wire spinner to help keep from snagging the lure.

In creeks/rivers during the spawn, my go to lure is always a chartreuse roadrunner, the curly tail variety. 1/8 or 1/16oz depening on how wide and deep the water is.

I caught them on spec rig in the Rio Grande. Everybody around me was using spec rigs.

By the looks of this thread, almost anything will work!

We've been slaying them on RoadRunners the past few years. Typically either silver or chartreuse.

My grandpa caught more sandies out of the Angelina river with a rat-l-trap than everyone here combined....and I mean that sincerely. It was the only lure he used and they used to pull them out by the icechest load.

growing up it was always weird to me how (for creek run sandies) some days you had to go yellow/chartreuse and some days white. if you missed the color you didn't catch a thing, same creek, different day. beetle spins were good too, but same color rules applied.

made for good taunting among brothers when one of us didn't have the color of the day. we could extract lots of chores from each other in return for a color match.

This is very true. One of my most memorable days of fishing as a young kid....fishing on the Leon River with my dad, on one particular day, the chosen color was pink. Nothing was working for me, or anyone else lining the bank. Just a few being caught here and there. I had one unopened package of pink crappie jigs. I tied one on and started catching them like crazy, while every one else around me hardly caught anything at all. I could tell everyone else was wondering why a 13 year old kid had more than every other person there. I gave several away to people nearby and then they started catching them.

That was a good day.

For trolling whites or hybrids the best I have found is a chrome hellbender with a 3 ft lead with a #13 Tony Acceta chrome pet spoon with a white feather

Up the creeks: white, chartreuse or yellow crappie jigs or curly tail or shad tail jigs. Or a chartreuse/white chain beadhead Clouser.

In bigger water during spring I like to troll the Rapala Shad Rap and Rapala sinking minnow. Chrome/blue or chrome/black rattletrap is good too.

In summer it's time to troll points with the Shad Rad or Hellbender/Pet Spoon combo. Or a slab for anchoring up over deep schools.
