Going to try my hand at feeding protein to deer this year. Any recommendations on brands of feed, does it matter?

The bigger the buck is on the bag, the better.

I've tried several and Antler Max produced better than the others.

Besides, it has a large buck right there on the bag.

Good luck. Takes a couple of years to really see the effect but it's worth it.

Los Cazadores Brand
Developed by Mooremans in South Texas.
Very high utilization, very low pass through protein. Very effficient.

Not a derail, not a huge deer hunter. For those of you that feed protein is that year round? Seasonal? In addition to corn feeders?

The best thing on the market right now is double down deer feed, it's made in Texas 100%. One of my buddies is one of the better known hunting outfitters for south Texas. He raves about this stuff like it's a god send. Looking at their pictures you can see it add 20 to 30" in a year. Most people including myself have always believed it takes 3 years to see real results in antler size when feeding protein. This stuff ****s on that premise. If you can't get this stuff, you cannot go wrong with purina antlermax either, although I don't think you get quite the boost like you do from double down.

Opinions vary like most things. I believe firmly in feeding protein year round. The reason for that is because the truth is...when you feed a deer protein it doesn't go straight to his antlers.
Most of the name brand proteins you'll find have added things in the pellet which are not growing your deers antlers, but giving them exactly what they need to be as healthy and nutritious as possible. If a deer is not completely healthy, its body can not pump all available nutrients and energy into developing antlers.

You'll find, and science does back this up that when protein is fed on a place year round, you usually have a higher survival rate and more sets of surviving twin fawns. The reasoning is the when your does are eating protein feed as well their much more healthy and their milk is also much more nutritious for their fawns and because their mother is so damn healthy she's able to birth healthier fawns. As for bucks, most people try to just feed while they're growing their antlers...which will help, but doesn't allow them to reach full potential. Especially after the rut you'd be amazed at how hard bucks will hit the protein pens, because they need the protein and minerals to help repair and get their health back after a brutal rut season.

You can disagree...but this is my opinion. Ive seen it why my own eyes.

We use the Mumme's protein. We'll know this year if it's working. Most of our bucks were immature, so next year we'll have several in the 4.5-6.5 year range, which is when they start shifting more of the protein they consume to antler growth.

Protein is just a supplement. If you don't have a comprehensive management plan that is overseen by a dictator, you are probably wasting your money. Don't switch feed brands because you can cause great harm to the digestive tracts of you deer possibly killing some.

We used Antlermax and then switched to MUmmes when prices were $15/bag.

I switched back to Antlermax this year and won't go back. Mummes was good and they ate it, but it was really inconsistent. I would have times where the same feeder would take all 10 bags and times it would only take 8.5. It was inconsistent in pellet size.

The Antlermax is much more consistent and I just like the science behind it for an extra $1.00 or less a bag.

Care to elaborate on this?

A deer, on a supplemental (not full diet) protein feed, can be severely impacted by a change in feeds? I'd like to hear why you think or know that.
