Yep... interesting experience. Thankfully I was in Austin. Cops were very professional. Still made my flight.. barely... I'm sure TSA is going to try and stick it to me... I almost gave my carry on to my 16 yr old daughter to take through when I went and parked the car... I'm very thankful I didn't do that. Lesson learned...

I feel like we get this PSA on here way more than we should from responsible gun owners.

I say it in every thread, but carry on bags are never used for anything else so no knives, guns, etc wind up being forgotten about.

Don't use carry on bags for anything else.

I can't figure out how anyone could be so careless to begin with.

Use it as a learning experience. There's some good advice here - like carryon bags being used exclusively for that...

But I'll echo that this scares me, because I ALWAYS know exactly where my firearms are - it's scary because this is the type of thing that anecdotally gets passed on to paint gun owners as irresponsible. I guess everyone has brain farts, but I can't see it ever happening to me. I'm religious about it.

Our carry on bags are never used for everyday use. Just traveling!

I landed in Denver from San Antonio and reached into the pocket of my jacket, which I hadn't worn since the previous winter. I nearly shat myself when I pulled out two live 12 gauge rounds. Couldn't believe TSA hadn't caught that.

It is careless, but I can understand how it happens.

That's so strange. I never take my belt off when going through the scanners. Last week I went through with a set of field notes in my back pocket and a pen in my front pocket. Didn't get a second look.

I was in Boston a few years back and the guy behind me made it through the scanners with a box cutter on his hip. Asked TSA after they waved him through if he was ok to have it post security. I used to always get a secondary screening when wearing cargo pants while flying. I did some research after the box cutter incident and found the body scanners poorly detect items on the sides of the body. Knowing this, the secondary scans made sense. I quit wearing cargo pants while flying 3-4 years ago and haven't had a secondary screening since.

With ******* comments like this, starting to get a lot easier to understand why people have reservations about posting most things on here.

Must be nice to go through life never having made a mistake or had a lapse in judgment or simply had a million things pop up in life. Congrats I guess.

Not only that, it seems he posted it in an effort to help others (not avg joker, though) avoid making a similar mistake. Some posters were then prompted to make useful suggestions like dedicated carry-on luggage.

Good PSA (not for avg joker, though).

It was actually the revolver my wife keeps in her car. Not a pistol I think about to often(not my daily carry). Last week I was in dallas and was staying in a hotel, remembered she kept it in her glove box and slipped it in my suitcase so it wouldnt be in the car over night. Fast forward to this morning. I was in a rush, between work, trying to get my daugter out of school on time to make flight, hair cut, etc... slipped my shoes in that pocket, never thought I would leave a gun in that bag.... Like I said, lesson learned... It amazes me how some of the guys on here can be total ********s(which I'm sure you wouldn't be to my face). I'll take it as tongue and cheek, but still... All I was trying to do was give everyone a heads up. Thank God we live in Texas.

This is a big fear of mine - more particularly that I forget some shotgun shell or something in my luggage from a hunting trip or something.

I may have posted this before. Years ago in college i bought a handgun. My car was being fixed so I was using my dads car. I returned the car to him. A few weeks later, I come home and my roommate says "you better call your dad, he's furious".

My dad worked at Lockheed. They have a serious security check. That morning they checked his trunk and found an empty magazine. They went nuts and tore the car apart. If they would have found a single round, my dad's career (he was kind of a big shot) would have been ruined.

Countless guys at Lockheed have been fired for leaving their rifles in the truck after a hunting weekend. I still feel like **** to this day.

I'm always worried that a shell is going to pop up somewhere. Thus, I'm pretty religious on running my hand into all pockets of bags, jackets, and pants that have ever been used for something other than work.

^ THIS - Thanks for sharing the story, it serves as a good reminder to all of us.

For those interested, the Texas CHL forum has a great board titled 'Never Again' where folks share stories like this to serve as lessons for others. It was a great help for me when I was new to guns and carrying because it brought up situations I would not have thought to plan for on my own.

Not exactly the same thing, but somewhere underneath the Progreso/Nuevo Progreso bridge is a 9mm Glock that I had to toss mid-bridge a few years ago southbound.

I fly for work A LOT. So I've kinda developed a rhythm for my TSA line check that speeds things along (grab 4 bins, laptop/bag/jacket/shoes & wallet, wear slide on shoes or tennis shoes, no cargo shorts, check pocket for knife BEFORE I put my check bag on the scale...etc). All of my helpful planning is awesome for speeding through the process and redundantly checking for things that would cause a problem.

It all boils down to these two simple rules:

-Terk's Two Simple Rules for Flying-

1. Never - EVER - be late for a flight
2. Avoid "the glove"

If you can follow those two simple rules and anything that would cause you to violate the , your airport travel experience will be much improved.

I got called over for forgetting a 12 gauge shell in my backpack. No biggie. I asked the tsa lady if i was going to a private room to be interrogated and she said no, they will just take it and add it to the collection they have. Let me go without issue. Probably much different for a firearm!

If you fly a lot, I highly recommend spending the $100 for Global Entry so you're guaranteed pre-check every time.

I don't fly as much as I used to, but still fly a decent amount. A TSA approved laptop bag is wonderful. I take everything out of my pockets and put it in the backpack. Unzip backpack flap so laptop is face up. Liquids go in a bin along with shoes, hat, and anything I forgot in pockets. Makes it very easy to grab my shoes/liquids and go.

I fly a ton for my job and the last thing I do is go through my notebook bag and carry on suitcase.

Why you may ask? I flew round trip a few years ago from Austin to Boston with a box of 30.06 shells in the front pouch (used the suitcase the week before to head to my dads place).

Kids, life, shells in a pocket in the front pocket of the suitcase which I never use....it happens for sure.

Want to know what those scanners hate? The security strip in euro bills. Had one I mistakenly left in my pocket in Munich and had been selected for additional screening in the terminal.

Yeah, I fly every week and the $100 I spent on global entry was the best money I ever spent. Everything stays in the bags, don't have to take anything off. Just walk through and pick up my bags on the other side.

..it happens!

I was pulled aside at IAH after my back pack went through the scanner. (It was a day trip so I had grabbed my camelback back pack.)

He said "this your bag?"
"Yeah, why?"

"Is this yours?" As he pulls out my really nice/rather large hunting knife.

Oops. I suddenly remembered that I had stuffed it in that bag on an all day mountain biking trip out in the middle of No where (about two months ago). Nice guy though.....he let me run back to my car and put it away and then waved to me to the front of the line when I returned.

But the best was my buddy's experience when we were traveling to California. Same story, he went through security, and while waiting for his bag the TSA officer asked "is this your bag sir?"

He answered yes although it was actually his wife's. For some reason he just decided to take her bag on this trip. The TSA officer then proceeded to pull out a ten inch chef's knife.

The look on his face was priceless! He then admitted it was actually his wife's bag and that he was going to need to call her and find out why she had that knife in her computer bag.

After a good solid pat down in a couple questions they kept the knife and let him go through. He called her later while we are waiting for the plane and she said that she kept the knife in her bag to cut her sandwiches at work!

Check your bags!

Two reasons not to mix carryons with firearms:

1) mistakes like this
2) so your bag doesn't test positive if it's swabbed, delaying you with further searching

I agree. The sweet thing about pre-check is you don't have to remove shoes or liquids.

An old friend of mine who I haven't seen since the 1980s did that in Waco a few years ago. He got arrested and went to jail.

From http://www.kxxv.com/story/11618992/man-arrested-for-gun-in-his-carry-on-at-wacos-airport:
Quote:

A Hico man was cuffed and take to jail Thursday afternoon after a handgun was found in his carry-on bag. He was going through security at Waco Regional airport.

Waco Police arrested 57-year-old Evan Garland around 4:45. He told officers he forgot the weapon was in the bag. Brown was transported to the McLennan County Jail and charged with possession of a firearm in a secured area at an airport.
