Holy cow. I would have lost my mind if I had worked that long on that bull only to lose the hide,skull, and meat. What an adventure!

What an awesome adventure. Now that is real hunting! You should be proud that you did all of that alone in a complete wilderness.

From the hindsight department, when I saw your raft I immediately thought "no way will he pack out a bison on that thing".
I'd give my left nut and both of Sean's to take my bow and a bigger raft down that same river.

Yea, I went so far as to call the company and talk it over with them and a couple locals that had been on the river before going with that smaller raft. I was under the weight limit by a decent margin and had the space, but just couldn't maneuver and cut back quickly like the river dictated. It was flowing higher than normal which didn't help my cause.
A larger raft may have helped but there were certain parts of that river that I could barely squeeze the small raft through between the bank and fallen trees. A larger raft would have been more stable so maybe it would not have not flipped, but it would definitely have been pinned and hit a bunch of debris, not to mention bottoming out frequently on the shallow stretches. That was unavoidable regardless of raft size. It just wasn't an ideal setting for a raft under a heavy load.
As far as bow hunting, it definitely would be doable and I thought about bringing mine before the amount of gear started adding up. Some animals were skittish but many weren't. The wind seemed to be a bigger factor than sight even on if the bison was concerned.

Never done anything approaching that but can't imagine going out into that type of country in such isolation. Can't wait to read PT2

That is just a flat out badass story, and I doubt you'll find a single one of us who aren't jealous.
Whoa sir, you are all that is man. Not just for the trip but for losing the hide, head and some meat and not going insane. Awesome hunt and report!

Amazing story and GREAT write up! Thanks for taking the time to summarize all of your personal thoughts and add the pictures in as well. Glad you made it out OK after the raft flipped. It's easy to say what you are "supposed" to do, and completely different to actually live it and practice it the hard way solo!
