Thanks.

Cedar elm. Leaves are too small for American.
Leaves should have a fine grit sandpaper like texture

The leaves are gritty. They are about the width of a nickel.

Cedar or winged elm. Are there "wings" on the branches?

I have a bunch of what I believe are cedar elms and post oaks.
Yours look happier than mine.
Post oaks look for a reason to die, be it too little water, not enough water, or allergic to humans.
The elms are a lot heartier and are great shade.

Yeah. I've been thinking something was wrong with the tree.

Cedar elms also have wings especially on younger trees. The give away that this is not a winged elm is that they seed/fruit in spring. Cedar Elms sees in fall.

I didn't have any interest in it when I was in school, but I would love to learn about it now.

Some of us paid attention in class....but yeah the timing of the seeds is a pretty good clue.

Dendrology lab with Oana Popescu was one of my favorites. Was a shame to hear when she passed.

We had three cedar elms in my backyard growing up, between those and the pecan tree there was never a shortage of branches on the ground to pick up.
