We have family in Fort Worth and Austin and want to purchase a lake house somewhere in between the two areas. In all honesty we are new to the lake house thing and would appreciate some advice. Thanks & Gig'em!

Whitney?

I've rented a cabin on that lake and it was nice. Not too crowded, out in the country.

You should look around Belton lake.

Was going to post this suggestion. Lots of homes and it gets crowded. Decent fishing.

We were hoping for something in the middle so that each family had a fairly even drive. Thanks!

You definitely should consider Whitney. We had a lake place there for about 25 yrs., kept our boat in one of the marinas, and really enjoyed our family time there.

Any particular part of Whitney you would recommend? We don't currently have a boat. We're newbies to the lake house thing

Didn't realize I already mentioned that

Is Whitney constant level? There is a lot of value in a constant level lake. Ask the people on Buchanan and Travis.

Lake Waco is in the middle. Whitney is going to be closer to FW but not too far from Waco. People I know at Whitney go into Waco to go to places like Home Depot, so it isn't that big a deal. I'd say, depending on where in both FW and Austin, 45 minutes from FW, 2 hours from Austin.

Double check me on this, but I think Whitney is one of the more steady lakes as far as water levels in this part of Texas.

If you decide to consider Granbury my mom just put her place up for sale.

I would recommend the area from the dam north to the Cedron Creek area. This is a very large area and there is a lot of deep, open water from the dam area North to Cedron Creek. This area is also the most accessible to the Hillsboro and Waco areas.

If you will need the services of a marina, Uncle Gus' Marina is the largest marina on the lake. In addition to the marina they have an RV park, cabins for rent, etc. http://www.unclegus.com/

Whitney is not a constant level lake. Are there any constant level lakes in Texas?

White Bluff on Whitney had a lot of property postings last month when I was out there.

Cedar Creek Lake, Gun Barrel City. Huge lake with very light boat traffic. Best lake bottom around. Hard clay bottom free of sticks and mud. Good fishing too.

LBJ.

Also, power plant lakes for obvious reasons.

Limestone is about the only other lake not mentioned here that could even possibly be considered in between the two cities. It's a nice fishing and boating lake. The further east you go, the more rain you can expect on average as well which can be a consideration with TX droughts. Limestone is also likely cheaper and less crowded on average.

Whitney seems like the obvious choice, but Limestone would probably be my runner up based on your criteria. As stated above Cedar Creek and RC are good fishing lakes but those are pretty much in the Dallas area, imo.

Good luck

Livingston. About the same distance from each city, constant level... Hey I even have a house I can sell you!

Limestone has good fishing. I believe they have rice farmers or something along those lines below the damn so that's bad during droughts when they're letting all the water out. It was bad a couple years ago, but so was most every other lake in Texas.

Also, I sunk a boat there. Watch out for trees.

My place is on Limestone and I love that lake, quiet most of the time and awesome fireworks on the 4th for the kids is a plus. I have never been skunked fishing and for catfish it is a winner.
