I would wager just about anybody who has visited Africa has been further off-road than Dan. Most people go there with the idea of getting off the road and seeing the wildlife. Dan's trip seems to be mostly about taking as many pictures as he can of his jeep parked next to paved roads. #twowheelsalwaysonblacktop

txags92 is right. A couple of years ago, my 18 year old daughter and I got farther off road than any of Dan's pics so far. And we weren't even trying.

This is semi-related, as it's occurring in Africa. Fighting in Kananga, DRC

Some of you may recall that I led an effort to raise funds to purchase and deliver new vinyl covered hospital mattresses for Presbyterian mission hospitals in Congo several years ago. In and around Kananga is where most of that effort was directed, and one, a Catholic clinic we helped, run by Sister Celini, is very near the Kananga airport.

Yes, there are a lot of crazies in Congo, but there are also some very good people, both Congolese, and mission workers. Please pray for peace there.

I don't think he ever claimed that he was going to be taking any crazy off road excursions. The ROAD chose him.

My wife would enjoy having Dan as her #africanUber

Before we married we planned a trip to RSA and Namibia - she was pretty amped up - but when I told her we would be in a 4x4 the whole trip she asked why

It was to be a vacation then engagement trip then honeymoon but she cried Uncle upon learning we'd be on "unimproved" roads at best.

[Note: planning started before I realized how badly she had been injured in a car wreck 5 years before we met - she broke her neck and was partially paralyzed for about 6 months - felt like a total heel for even suggesting Africa]

she keeps re-branding herself, can't make her mind up.

was sheff digital photography, and sheffdp, and now sheff creative productions.

her webpage moved from sheffdp.com to sheffcp.com
I would never expect this type of behavior from a woman.
FYI, sheffcp.com is dead now, and she has moved back to sheffdp.com

so her webpage was sheffdp, then sheffcp, and back to sheffdp.

For someone that used to be a "Consumer Marketing Specialist," she's not very good at brand management.

It was amazing to arrive in Africa and find that its reputation did not align with its realities. I discovered that I'd sooner be more concerned with travelling to a Trump support rally or inner-city neighbourhood in the United States, than I would be travelling to most African destinations.

Sure various regions of Africa have their problems, but so do a lot of other countries too. Need I remind that approximately 30 people die every day in the United States as a result of gun violence, and the country experiences some of the worst racial and gender prejudices of our time. Yet everyone wants to travel to America, the land of the "free" - the Brand USA tourism campaign makes sure of it. The United States has the world's highest incarceration rate - double that of South Africa - so who is the more troubled and dangerous region now?
BOOM. Africa is a better place to go than the United States, and you can thank the United States tourism campaign (?) for tricking you into thinking otherwise. Open your eyes, sheeple.

She took a lot of beautiful, vibrant photos. Of course there is great beauty in both Africa and her people. There is also great poverty, great need, great cruelty and great injustice.

I'd be more impressed if her photos even attempted to paint a picture of a little bit of all of that.

That's just the American Tourism Campaign talking Emily. Africa is a great place to be a woman.

No kidding? She's is being forced to cover up in public and all you want to do is downplay that oppression with how 'stunning' it looks.

hilarious how she dismisses those that say Africa is dangerous when they haven't experienced it themselves, but then says that Trump rallies are dangerous even though she hasn't been to one.

haha I was about to post this exact quote as well. it's not oppression that she is desperately trying to get away from....it's "stunning traditional dress"

Anyone else thinking that this is just part of the ruse so that Dan can try to keep saying he is traveling solo? Admit that Emily was there, but she is gone now. Then in reality, she is still riding along?

My guess is that he will have people travel with him along different stretches of the trip.

No one will be with him the entire time, but he will never be traveling alone.

holy crap that is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard, yet i know tons of people believe it. I'm not saying the US doesnt have any racial issues, you bet we do. But the african nation i live in is full of racial strife that we dont even come close to touching. I know of a woman whose husband was of a different people group. One day he just up and decides he no longer wants to be married to a woman of a different ethnicity, divorces her, and marries someone from his own group. as bad as tensions seem to be in the states, you dont see stuff like that, and thats not even a violent or political example.

especially considering the context. her blog is chock full of stories about women who are hugely oppressed by any objective standard, on a continent where women being gang raped and having their breasts cut off while their infants are murdered in front of them is not all that uncommon, and then she has the gall to say that the US experiences some of the worst gender prejudices of our time. GET THE **** OUT OF HERE. there is no better place to be a woman than in 2016 America. full stop.

I wont even get into the racial aspect because it's even more ludicrous.
