How long do you want to ignore this user?
So I had an infestation of a small rat family starting late last year. Got in the garage and caused all sorts of problems. After trapping and poisoning I eventually killed all but one. That one rat is NEO Reborn. I have now tried three different types of traps ranging from snap traps to glue to electric with different baits and two different kinds of poisons. This. Thing. Will. Not. Die. It seems completely uninterested in everything I set out except when I tried Peanut butter on the snap traps. It likes that. I have now fed it about ten times with PB. It sets them off safely somehow and then just proceeds to eat the PB. Finally gave up on those.

This morning my frustration level hit max when I did a load of laundry and came back when it was finished to a huge pool of grey water in my garage. ****er had gnawed a huge hole in the water outflow line at some point very recently. I don't know what to do at this point. I have never had this issue before. My thoughts are now just post up in the corner with a BB gun and wait all night.

Thoughts or advice/ suggestions please?

Now for a serious answer. Get a rat snap trap (the big one). Alter the trigger to make it a hairpin. Then get a raw peanut and jam it really tight under the lip of the trap. If he even sniffs it it should go off. Get two of them like this and set them about 2-3" apart. Those dudes will jump a single trap but won't jump a double.

I remember once while I was back in school, we had a big rat that was spotted in our POS house a few times. We tried trapping but were unsuccessful. Finally I got tired of that bastage living in the same house as me, so I went and bought some .22 rat shot.

I was staying up late studying one night, and had my .22 Browning Buckmark right beside me. He came scurrying across the living room floor and stopped for just a split second. Word of advice, discharging a .22 pistol indoors is very loud.

He met his maker that night, and I had to clean up rat blood off the living room carpet.

As long as someone pays a tech fee and a user agreement is signed I bet Monsanto would jump all over the rat business

If peanut butter is his vice, put poison in peanut butter. KISS.

Make damn sure your pets can't get to it.

You want to make sure he dies somewhere you can throw him away - otherwise you get the joy of trying to find where the horrible odor is coming from.

Did something similar in my own POS house a couple of years ago.

Every year when fall evenings started to get cold, the field mice would move in. Traps would usually take care of them, but one year we had a couple that just wouldn't get caught.

I was sitting in the LR one afternoon with a few of the kids. Quiet, kids napping, I was reading. Heard scurrying on the other side of the room, looked up and 3 fat little mice were hugging the baseboard headed under the couch. I waited until they got to the couch, then gently woke up one of the boys. "Go get me your airsoft pistol, a couple of crackers and the peanut butter."

He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and said "Huh?"

"There's some mice under the sofa. If we can lure them out we'll shoot 'em."

"Will airsoft kill a mouse?"

"We're about to find out."

I didn't think a cheapy little spring-powered airsoft pistol would kill them, but it did the trick. One by one those fat little *******s came out to snack on peanut butter crackers. Last meal they ever ate.

I let my 7 year old shoot the last one. Twice the hero!

Not the most time-efficient way to do it, but we weren't doing anything else that afternoon. It was kinda fun. I doubt airsoft would kill a rat though. The double trap idea is probably your best bet. .22 rat shot is good, but you may not want that in your laundry area. Poisoned PB is good too, but it's too easy for pets to get into.

This is what finally caught the one in my garage. I baited it with dog food covered in peanut butter. The way the trap is set up the food sits in the middle of the trigger in a small tube.

It is the Tomcat Rat Traps you can get them at Walmart.

Use one of these.

If it will kill a squirrel, it will kill a rat.

These are easier to set up.

Yeah, I have rat boxes around the outside perimeter of my house with these traps in them along with poison to double down on my chances in case they happen to avoid the snap. I've got roughly 2 on each side of the house, and I've done what I can to plug any points of entry to the house. Highly effective that has kept them out for years - dead before creating a new way in.

That said, I did have one get away a few weeks ago. Sucker gnawed is own leg off. Found a little claw in my trap.

We had them coming in bad one year, and I had a line of 4 traps in a row along their entry point.

Sitting with my door open one night, I hear *pow....pow powpow* I thin ought I hit the motherload..... effing 4 foot long rat snake in them did agree. I managed to extricate him, and as far as I could tell he was fine. I put him in the garage and made sure the hole he found was blocked better. Never found him dead so I assumed he lived.

Build a bucket rat trap video

Don't forget the board ramp up to the bucket. Also, put 4"- 6" of water in the bucket so the rat can't jump out and drowns.

Get a live trap (raccoon size), use the peanut butter...then you get the pleasure of dispatching it in a matter that pleases you most.

No way it can reach the bait without springing the trap. I caught a huge rat with catfood while trying to catch a coon.

Pretty much this, but we didn't mess with the spinning coke bottle - just tossed a few ritz crackers with a dollop of PB on them in the 6" of water (5 gallon bucket) and put a ramp going up. Had a slew of dead mice within a week doing this (jobsite trailer, we were easily entertained).

I think it was almost two years ago my MIL's dogs came over and flushed a rat that ran along the fence stringers. The dogs focused on a sego palm plant near the pool. There was also a deck on the side yard I could tell they were nesting under. I used the big plastic rat trap and caught ten rats in about a week and a half. That included three in one day at the same location. The next year I put out two traps several times with no results but one day the trap was gone and I never have found it.

I think the rat is going to kill you. I'd move before that happens. Otherwise it was nice knowing you.

Somewhere there is a coon or opossum with a great story.

We did wonder one year why all of our rat bait along with random items went missing. Turns out it was a pack rat. We found combs, an alarm clock, and other various small things in his nest. Along with all of our poison. Apparently, he never ate any, he just stole it.

22 mag did the trick.

Well little ******* did not take to the PB covered poison.

That's it. Time to go primal. Getting a BB gun and some coffee and posting up in the corner tomorrow night. Thought about suppressed .22 but worried about a through and through into the wall and nicking an electrical wire or something. Otherwise it's into the concrete floor and I have a healthy fear of ricochets. That is my kind of luck. It's a suppressed rifle too so ratshot is out.

Had the same problem in my garage. He was eating insulation out of the walls. I bought one of those tiny crossbows from Atwoods and he was dead that weekend.

One thing I learned while dealing with an attic rat infestation is that you have to be patient when introducing a new trap or poison. Rats are way smarter than mice and will often avoid something new in their environment, especially if it's placed in their usual pathways. Try giving the poisoned PB a few days to get it used to it and see if it doesn't take the bait.

Unless you're planning to do something drastic with a gun/fire/tannerite/laser/small nuclear device AND you are video taping your efforts, in which case you should proceed STAT

I would find a female, bc tomcat spray on everything in my garage wouldn't be worth it to me. Stinkin bastages.

In our tack room, we used to get giant rats that would chew on anything and everything they could. A guy that worked out there came up with the most fun way to dispatch rats EVER.

One person would make a hell of a racket after they opened the tack room door, and walk to the back right corner of the room. Causing the rats to scurry
down the wall leading to the outside. They always ran along the same wall that shot straight outside. Another person would wait, out of sight, with their weapon of choice just outside the door and bludgeon the rats to hell. I got pretty good with an old Callaway Big Bertha driver. I could tink those fkrs all the way across the room against the back wall. It was like my own driving range. Still never figured out how I could hit a moving rat, but not a stationary golf ball. We would get 2 to 3 rats like this every week.
